Azure Data Engineer

About the Role

We are looking for an experienced Azure Data Engineer with strong hands-on expertise in Microsoft SQL Server and Azure data engineering technologies.

The ideal candidate should be comfortable working with complex SQL queries, stored procedures, functions, query optimisation and large-scale data processing. You will be responsible for building, maintaining and optimising data pipelines and ensuring data quality, consistency and reliability across production environments.

This role requires someone who understands data beyond simply moving it from one system to another — someone who can troubleshoot, optimise and take ownership of data engineering solutions.

Key Responsibilities

• Design, develop and maintain scalable data pipelines using Azure Data Factory.
• Build and optimise data processing solutions using Azure Databricks and PySpark.
• Work extensively with Microsoft SQL Server, including complex queries, stored procedures, functions, views and performance tuning.
• Analyse and optimise SQL execution plans, indexes, statistics and query performance.
• Troubleshoot SQL Server performance issues, including blocking, deadlocks and inefficient queries.
• Work with Azure Data Lake Storage Gen2 for data storage and processing.
• Develop and maintain ETL/ELT workflows for structured and semi-structured data.
• Implement data validation, reconciliation and quality checks to ensure data accuracy and consistency.
• Collaborate with engineering and business teams to understand data requirements and deliver reliable solutions.
• Monitor production data pipelines, identify issues and ensure timely resolution.
• Follow good engineering practices around data security, maintainability, documentation and traceability.

Mandatory Technical Skills

1. Microsoft SQL Server – Core Requirement

• Strong proficiency in advanced T-SQL.
• Hands-on experience with complex SQL queries, joins, CTEs and window functions.
• Development and optimisation of stored procedures, scalar and table-valued functions, and views.
• Strong understanding of execution plans, indexing, statistics and query optimisation.
• Experience troubleshooting parameter sniffing, blocking, deadlocks and performance bottlenecks.
• Understanding of transactions, error handling and SQL Server performance management.

2. Azure Data Engineering

• Hands-on experience with Azure Data Factory.
• Working knowledge of Azure Databricks and PySpark.
• Experience with Azure Data Lake Storage Gen2.
• Strong understanding of ETL/ELT concepts and data pipeline architecture.

3. Programming and Data Processing

• Proficiency in Python.
• Experience handling large datasets and building efficient data processing workflows.
• Understanding of data modelling, data transformation and reconciliation.

Good to Have

• Experience working with financial, banking or transaction-oriented datasets.
• Understanding of data governance, data lineage and data quality frameworks.
• Experience with production data environments and enterprise-scale data platforms.
• Exposure to monitoring, logging and troubleshooting data pipelines.

Work Location and Interview Process

• This is a mandatory work-from-office position. Remote and hybrid arrangements are not available.
