Job Profile: High School Social Studies TeacherJob Title:

High School Social Studies Teacher

Job Summary:

The High School Social Studies Teacher is responsible for planning, implementing, and assessing lessons that develop students’ understanding of history, geography, civics, economics, and culture. The teacher promotes critical thinking, civic responsibility, and global awareness through engaging instructional strategies and standards-based curriculum design.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Develop and deliver engaging lesson plans aligned with state and national social studies standards.
  • Teach courses such as World History, U.S. History, Government, Economics, Geography, and Civics.
  • Use diverse instructional methods — including lectures, discussions, group projects, simulations, and technology-based activities.
  • Assess and evaluate student progress through assignments, tests, and projects.
  • Create a positive classroom environment that encourages inquiry, respect, and collaboration.
  • Integrate current events and global perspectives into lessons.
  • Maintain accurate records of student grades, attendance, and behavior.
  • Communicate effectively with parents, administrators, and colleagues regarding student performance and behavior.
  • Participate in professional development, school meetings, and extracurricular activities as required.
  • Foster civic awareness and promote democratic values in the classroom.

Qualifications & Education Requirements:

  • Education:
  • Bachelor’s degree in Education, History, Political Science, Sociology, Geography, or related field.
  • Master’s degree (preferred or required by some districts).
  • Certification:
  • State teaching certification or license for secondary education in Social Studies.
  • Experience:
  • Prior teaching or student-teaching experience at the secondary level (highly desirable).

Skills and Competencies:

  • Strong knowledge of history, geography, and civics.
  • Excellent classroom management and communication skills.
  • Ability to differentiate instruction for diverse learners.
  • Proficient in educational technology (Google Classroom, Smart Boards, etc.).
  • Strong organizational and planning abilities.
  • Passion for inspiring civic engagement and social awareness.

Work Environment:

  • Works in a classroom setting within a high school (grades 9–12).
  • May also participate in extracurricular clubs such as Model UN, Debate, or History Club.
  • Typical school hours with occasional evening or weekend events.
