Job Description

A radiology medical coder's job description involves reviewing patient records to accurately assign diagnostic and procedural codes (CPT, ICD-10-CM, HCPCS) for radiology services like CT, MRI, and ultrasound. Key responsibilities include ensuring coding accuracy and compliance with federal and payer guidelines, meeting productivity standards, and collaborating with other healthcare professionals to resolve coding discrepancies. They must also stay updated on coding regulations and assist with audits.    Key responsibilities
  • Code review and assignment:

     Analyze patient medical records and radiology reports to assign correct ICD-10-CM, CPT, and HCPCS codes for procedures and diagnoses.
  • Specialized coding:

     Code for various radiology modalities, including X-rays, CT scans, MRIs, ultrasounds, nuclear medicine, and radiation oncology.
  • Compliance:

     Ensure all coding is compliant with guidelines from organizations like CMS, the American College of Radiology (ACR), and other specific payers.
  • Auditing and denial management:

     Address claim denials by understanding the root causes and working to improve coding accuracy. Assist with internal and external audits.
  • Collaboration:

     Communicate with radiologists, billing staff, and auditors to resolve coding-related issues and discrepancies.
  • Productivity:

     Meet or exceed daily productivity and accuracy benchmarks as set by the department.
     
  Required skills and qualifications
  • Certification:

     A Certified Professional Coder (CPC) certification is often a requirement.
  • Experience:

     A minimum of 1-2 years of hands-on experience in radiology coding is typically needed.
  • Knowledge:

     Proficiency in medical terminology and knowledge of various coding systems (e.g., Epic, Cerner) is essential.
  • Regulatory understanding:

     Strong understanding of coding guidelines, National Correct Coding Initiative (NCCI) edits, and other regulatory changes.
  • Technical skills:

     Strong computer proficiency, including experience with multiple Electronic Health Records (EHRs).
  • Soft skills:

     Excellent attention to detail, strong communication skills, and the ability to work independently and as part of a team.
