Photonics Engineer

Photonics Engineer Job Summary: We are seeking a highly motivated Photonics Engineer with hands-on experience in SNSPD-based systems and optical setups to support the development of advanced quantum photonic technologies. This role involves working at the cutting edge of optical detection, quantum optics, and cryogenic systems in a lab-based, experimental setting. You will be responsible for designing, aligning, and maintaining precision optical systems integrated with superconducting detectors. Key Responsibilities: Design and implement free-space and fiber-based optical setups for single-photon experiments using SNSPDs. Integrate and align optical components (lenses, mirrors, beamsplitters, polarizers, etc.) in darkroom and cryogenic environments. Operate and maintain cryogenic systems (e.g., closed-cycle cryostats or dilution refrigerators) for SNSPD performance. Optimize photon coupling efficiency into SNSPDs through precision alignment and mode-matching techniques. Collaborate with electrical and cryo-engineering teams for system integration and testing. Analyze photon detection data, signal-to-noise performance, and quantum efficiency metrics. Document procedures, experimental setups, calibration processes, and results for reproducibility. Maintain safety and cleanliness protocols in the darkroom and around cryogenic equipment. Contribute to R&D efforts and feasibility studies for new optical technologies or applications Required Qualifications: Masters or PhD in Optical Engineering, Applied Physics, Photonics, or a related discipline. Hands-on experience with Photonic, SNSPDs or other single-photon detection systems. Strong understanding of geometrical and physical optics, fiber coupling, and photon-counting techniques. Skilled in precision optical alignment and laser safety in darkroom or low-light environments. Familiarity with vacuum systems, or optical test benches, optical fabrication, metrology, and testing techniques. Proficient with LabVIEW, Python, or MATLAB for data acquisition and control. Excellent problem-solving and analytical skills. Effective communication skills and ability to work in a cross-functional team. Preferred Qualifications: Experience in quantum optics experiments or quantum communication systems. Familiarity with time-correlated single-photon counting (TCSPC) techniques. Experience integrating SNSPDs into photonic integrated circuits (PICs) or fiber-coupled modules. Prior experience in a cleanroom. Knowledge of low-noise electronics, RF shielding, or superconducting circuits.
