Job Description

drawing blood from patients for various medical or donation purposes

  • Patient Preparation:

    Explaining the procedure, addressing patient concerns, and ensuring a comfortable and safe environment.
  • Blood Collection:

    Performing venipuncture (drawing blood from a vein) and capillary punctures (drawing blood from a fingertip).
  • Specimen Handling:

    Properly labeling blood collection tubes, storing them in appropriate conditions, and preparing them for transport to the laboratory.
  • Equipment Maintenance:

    Ensuring all equipment is sterile and properly maintained, and adhering to safety and hygiene protocols.
  • Record Keeping:

    Maintaining accurate records of blood draws, patient information, and test requisitions.
  • Communication:

    Effectively communicating with patients, nurses, doctors, and laboratory staff.
  • Quality Control:

    Ensuring accuracy in blood collection procedures and compliance with quality control standards.
  • Inventory Management:

    Maintaining adequate stock of phlebotomy supplies.

Additional Responsibilities (depending on the setting):

  • Performing basic laboratory tests:

    Some phlebotomists may perform certain point-of-care tests, such as glucose monitoring.
  • Assisting with blood transfusions:

    In some settings, phlebotomists may assist with blood transfusions.
  • Participating in quality assurance programs:

    Ensuring the quality and accuracy of blood collection and laboratory processes.
  • Training and Mentoring:

    Some phlebotomists may be responsible for training and mentoring new phlebotomists.

Key Skills and Qualifications:

  • Technical Skills:

    Proficiency in venipuncture and capillary puncture techniques, proper specimen handling, and knowledge of laboratory equipment.
  • Communication Skills:

    Ability to clearly explain procedures, address patient concerns, and communicate effectively with other healthcare professionals.
