OT Technician (Scrub Side)

The Scrub OT Technician is responsible for assisting the surgical team by preparing the sterile field, handling surgical instruments, and ensuring adherence to aseptic techniques throughout the procedure. The role requires strong technical skills, attention to detail, and the ability to work efficiently in high-pressure surgical environments.

Key Responsibilities1. Pre-operative Responsibilities

• Prepare and arrange surgical instruments, supplies, drapes, and equipment for procedures.
• Check sterility indicators and ensure all materials are sterile and within validity.
• Assist in preparing the operating room according to the surgical procedure requirements.
• Ensure proper functioning of OT lights, suction, cautery, instrument sets, and other equipment.
• Equip the surgeon with correct gowning and gloving assistance as required.

2. Intra-operative Responsibilities

• Maintain a sterile field throughout the surgery by strictly following aseptic techniques.
• Hand over instruments, sponges, sutures, and consumables to the surgeon and assistant in the correct sequence and timely manner.
• Anticipate surgeon’s needs based on the procedure and assist proactively.
• Count instruments, sponges, and sharps before, during, and after procedures along with circulating staff.
• Handle specimens appropriately and ensure correct labelling as per protocol.
• Ensure patient safety and support the surgical team until closure of the wound.

3. Post-operative Responsibilities

• Assist in safe disposal of used items as per biomedical waste guidelines.
• Clean, decontaminate, and send instruments for CSSD sterilization with proper documentation.
• Restock and arrange instrument sets for the next case.
• Help in preparing OT for the following procedure.

4. Compliance & Quality

• Follow infection control practices and maintain OT discipline at all times.
• Adhere to hospital policies, NABH standards, and safety protocols.
• Participate in audits, trainings, and continuous quality improvement activities.

• Strong knowledge of surgical instruments and OT workflow.
• Excellent understanding of aseptic and sterile techniques.
• Ability to work in emergency and high-stress situations.

Qualification & Experience

• Diploma in OT Technology.
• Minimum 2–3 years of experience as Scrub OT Technician (experience may vary as per hospital policy).
• Experience in General Surgery, Ortho, Gastro, Neuro and other specialties preferred.

Work Conditions

• Rotational shifts, including weekends and on-call duties.
• Ability to stand for long hours and work in fast-paced OT environment.
