Role and Responsibilities: - Manage mechanical work packages, producing schedules, resource estimates, and design development plans. - Design opto-mechanical systems using appropriate tools from initial design concept to detailed final design. - Perform FEA of mechanical systems oriented to determine frequency response, mechanical stresses, and deformations due to dynamic forces and loads, including thermal load cases. - Drive and maintain the mechanical alignment budget at the system level. - Review possible layouts/orientations to optimize design elements. Design, assemble, and test mechanical parts including ground support equipment for lab testing on imager prototypes and flight models. - Produce/manage the production of manufacturing drawings to enable the designs to be manufactured and support manufacturing processes. - Maintain a design log, summarising each step in the design, and development process. Present in design reviews. - Work with cross-functional global teams with external stakeholders. Qualifications: - Bachelors in mechanical engineering, master's preferred or closely related subject. - Work experience of 5 years in opto-mechanical systems. Must have: - Experience with designing precision opto-mechanical systems with a strong understanding of optical metrology and optical testing methods. - Proven experience working with CAD (Solidworks or Siemens NX), generating detailed toleranced mechanical fabrication drawings. - Experience in the design of electromechanical mechanisms, precision mechanics, and/or precision motion control is desirable. - Demonstrated experience in performing FEA model simplification, simulation, and analysis. Specifically for optical-structural performance for static deformations, modal analysis, and thermal deformation. - Excellent analytical, problem-solving, verbal, and written communication skills. Good to have: - Basic understanding of multiple domains of satellite engineering, such as space systems, sensors, in-orbit operations, and the effect of thermomechanical distortions on image quality. - Experience in designing for high-reliability space environments designing for launch survivability, vacuum, and on-orbit thermal conditions (STOP). - Experience with the design and fabrication of glass/composite/metallic/ceramic assemblies, epoxies, mechanisms, and electrical components in the context of opto-mechanical systems. - Basic knowledge of optical design. - Designing, analyzing, modeling, and simulating heat transfer and thermal management solutions.
