Job Description

Job Summary

The NICU Staff Nurse is responsible for delivering comprehensive care to critically ill newborns, including premature and low birth-weight infants, under the supervision of neonatologists. The nurse will monitor vital signs, administer medications, provide nutritional support, and assist in medical procedures while ensuring emotional support to the families.

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide direct nursing care to neonates admitted in the NICU.
  • Monitor vital signs and clinical conditions using advanced monitoring equipment.
  • Administer medications, IV fluids, and perform procedures like gavage feeding, suctioning, and catheterization as per physician orders.
  • Maintain infection control practices and follow hand hygiene protocols.
  • Document patient condition, nursing assessments, medication administration, and treatments accurately in the electronic or manual health record.
  • Operate and monitor medical equipment such as ventilators, CPAP machines, incubators, infusion pumps, and phototherapy units.
  • Assist doctors during rounds, procedures, and emergency interventions.
  • Educate and support parents/guardians regarding the care and progress of their infants.
  • Participate in neonatal resuscitation and emergency response as needed.
  • Maintain inventory and ensure availability of emergency drugs and consumables.
  • Collaborate with interdisciplinary teams (doctors, therapists, dieticians, etc.) for holistic care.
  • Comply with hospital policies, NABH/JCI standards, and nursing protocols.

Qualifications

  • GNM / B.Sc. Nursing / Post Basic B.Sc. Nursing from a recognized institution.
  • Valid nursing registration (State Nursing Council).
  • NRP (Neonatal Resuscitation Program) certification preferred.

Experience

  • Minimum 1 - 5 years of experience in NICU or pediatric critical care preferred.
  • Fresher nurses with specialized NICU training may also be considered.
