Role Summary
The MYP/DP Chemistry Teacher is responsible for planning, delivering, and assessing engaging Chemistry lessons aligned with the IB MYP and DP curriculum framework. The teacher must demonstrate subject expertise, employ inquiry-based approaches, and nurture students’ scientific curiosity, critical thinking, and problem-solving skills. In addition, the teacher is expected to contribute to the holistic development of students and actively engage in the school’s academic and co-curricular life.
Core ResponsibilitiesOrganizational
- Demonstrate thorough knowledge of the IB philosophy and Chemistry syllabus in MYP and DP.
- Develop unit plans, lesson plans, and assessments that meet curriculum and program requirements.
- Attend collaborative planning sessions, flag-raising ceremonies, and other important events as required.
- Submit unit plans, assessments, and report card grades/comments within deadlines.
- Provide office hours weekly to support students, including those with special needs.
- Assess students’ work using MYP criteria and DP subject-specific assessment objectives.
- Communicate regularly with parents and counselors on student performance and progress.
- Guide students in building portfolios, lab reports, and extended essays (where applicable).
- Participate in professional development activities and stay updated with IB resources.
- Exhibit professionalism in appearance, voice, and demeanor; serve as a role model.
- Supervise and support school activities such as student clubs, science fairs, sports events, or open houses.
- Ensure classroom safety and proper maintenance of laboratory equipment, chemicals, and materials.
- Effectively use school platforms such as ManageBac, PowerSchool, and digital learning tools.
- Provide recommendation letters for students applying for higher studies.
Planning
- Collaborate with colleagues to plan student-centered learning experiences.
- Design lessons and units that build on students’ prior knowledge and skills.
- Plan inquiry-based and concept-driven units of study, connecting Chemistry with real-world contexts.
- Incorporate interdisciplinary connections with other sciences and subjects.
- Differentiate planning to meet a wide range of student abilities.
- Ensure that planning includes opportunities for both formative and summative assessment.
Teaching
- Deliver engaging and interactive Chemistry lessons using inquiry, experimentation, and scientific investigation.
- Create a stimulating and safe classroom and laboratory environment.
- Employ a variety of teaching strategies, including group work, lab experiments, discussions, and project-based learning.
- Integrate TOK (Theory of Knowledge) discussions and international-mindedness in DP lessons.
- Use a variety of teaching resources and perspectives to enrich learning.
- Empower students to take ownership of their learning and apply Chemistry concepts in real-life contexts.
- Address the diverse needs of students, including ESL learners and those with different learning abilities.
- Provide extension opportunities for students needing academic challenges.
- Ensure lesson plans and curriculum documentation are uploaded on ManageBac in a timely manner.
Assessing
- Use varied assessment methods including lab investigations, projects, tests, and presentations.
- Provide regular, constructive feedback to students to guide improvement.
- Maintain accurate and up-to-date records of student achievement.
- Involve students in self-assessment and reflection.
- Collaborate with colleagues to ensure consistent and fair application of assessment criteria.
- Use assessment data to inform planning and differentiate instruction.
- Support students in preparing for internal and external assessments (e.g., DP Chemistry exams, MYP eAssessment).
Professional Appraisal and Development
- Actively participate in professional appraisals and feedback cycles.
- Pursue ongoing professional development in Chemistry teaching and IB pedagogy.
- Read relevant literature and research to improve subject knowledge and teaching methodology.
- Share best practices with colleagues and mentor new staff when required.

- Maintain discipline and establish a respectful, safe, and stimulating learning environment.

- Ensure safe laboratory practices, adherence to safety protocols, and proper handling of chemicals.
- Supervise students responsibly during school duties, examinations, and events.

Teamwork and Collaboration
- Participate in school meetings, assemblies, and professional learning communities.
- Collaborate with science department colleagues to ensure vertical and horizontal curriculum alignment.
- Support the induction and mentoring of new faculty members.
- Contribute to interdisciplinary projects and whole-school initiatives.
- Cover lessons for absent colleagues when required.
Qualifications and Experience
- Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Chemistry or a related field (B.Ed. preferred).
- Minimum 3–5 years of teaching experience, with proven expertise in IB MYP and DP Chemistry.
- Strong knowledge of inquiry-based pedagogy and IB assessment frameworks.
- Experience in laboratory management and safety procedures.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
- Proficiency in digital teaching tools (ManageBac, MS Teams, etc.).
