(Lithotripsy) Machine Technician

Responsibilities of the Healthcare TeamA collaborative team ensures the safety and success of the procedure.

• Urologist: The performing physician is responsible for patient selection, procedure planning, initial stone localization, and adapting treatment parameters based on variations encountered during the procedure.
• Anesthesiologist/Anesthetist: Ensures the patient receives adequate anesthesia and analgesia. They monitor the patient's vital signs and help control patient movement or respiration to maintain accurate targeting.
• Certified Technician/Radiographer: Prepares and manages the lithotripsy equipment, operates the imaging equipment (fluoroscopy/ultrasound), and may assist in positioning the patient.
• Nurse: Vital for monitoring the patient's condition and administering medications during the procedure. Post-procedure responsibilities include providing aftercare instructions to the patient and family, emphasizing hydration and pain management.

Post-Procedure Patient ResponsibilitiesThe patient has responsibilities to ensure successful recovery and stone fragment passage:

• Hydration: Drink plenty of water for several weeks after the procedure to help flush out stone fragments.
• Stone Collection: Use a provided strainer to collect any passed stone pieces for analysis, which helps determine the cause and prevent future stones.
• Monitoring Symptoms: Watch for signs of complications, such as unmanageable pain, fever, or an inability to urinate, and contact a healthcare provider immediately if they occur.
• Follow-up: Attend follow-up appointments and have temporary ureteral stents removed as scheduled to prevent further complications.
