Role Overview

We are seeking a hands-on Database Engineer to lead the performance, reliability, security and design of the databases behind our PHP, Java and mobile applications. You will optimize MySQL production systems, build scalable transactional and analytical data models, and support dependable reporting without disrupting live operations.

Key Responsibilities

· Design, optimize and maintain MySQL databases on AWS RDS / Aurora for high availability and performance.

· Build schemas for transactional (OLTP) and analytics workloads, including star / snowflake schemas and fact / dimension tables.

· Develop and maintain ETL / ELT pipelines from application databases and Firebase to analytical data stores.

· Investigate and tune slow queries, indexing, partitioning and configuration; partner with developers on efficient SQL.

· Implement and routinely validate backup, restore, replication, failover and disaster-recovery processes.

· Apply data security controls covering permissions, encryption and audit logging.

· Own schema changes, migrations and version control in coordination with development and DevOps teams.

· Deliver trustworthy, documented datasets for dashboards, reporting and business decision-making.

· Own MySQL database performance, monitoring, capacity planning and optimization across production environments.

· Establish database health dashboards covering query latency, replication lag, storage, connections and database resource utilization.

· Implement automated data validation and reconciliation to ensure accurate order, customer, delivery and transaction records.

· Define and regularly test database recovery procedures with agreed Recovery Time Objectives (RTO) and Recovery Point Objectives (RPO).

· Manage safe database migrations, schema versioning and deployment coordination to minimize application disruption.

· Develop reliable ETL/ELT pipelines with scheduled execution, incremental loading, error handling and monitoring.

· Collaborate with engineering and business stakeholders to support reporting, operational dashboards and analytical requirements.

· Implement role-based permissions, sensitive-data protection, data retention and database auditing practices.

Required Skills & Experience

· 4+ years of relevant experience in database engineering, DBA or data engineering.

· Advanced MySQL and SQL expertise, including query tuning and execution-plan analysis.

· Experience in dimensional modelling and choosing appropriate normalization / denormalization patterns.

· Hands-on AWS RDS, Aurora and S3, plus at least one of Redshift, Athena or Glue.

· ETL / ELT development using Python, SQL, Airflow or AWS Glue.

· Strong foundation in replication, high availability, backups and recovery.

· Ability to explain design decisions to engineers and business stakeholders.

Preferred Skills

· BI tools: Metabase, Tableau, Power BI or Amazon QuickSight.

· Firebase / NoSQL: Firestore and Realtime Database.

· Data warehousing: Redshift, Snowflake or BigQuery.

· Database CI/CD, Infrastructure as Code and migration tools such as Flyway or Liquibase.

·  Relevant AWS data or database certifications.

Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering or a related discipline, or equivalent practical experience.
