AWS Engineer – UKI SAPDecomEnabler
Role Purpose We are looking for an experienced AWS Engineer to join the UKI SAPDecomEnabler squad, supporting Centrica's technology transformation and SAP decommissioning programme. The engineer will be responsible for designing, building, automating and supporting secure and scalable AWS based solutions that enable the migration, integration, archival and decommissioning of legacy SAP related workloads and associated services. The role requires strong hands on AWS engineering capability combined with Infrastructure as Code, DevOps automation, integration and operational support experience. The successful candidate will work within a cross functional Agile squad alongside architects, application engineers, SAP teams, security, infrastructure, product and business stakeholders. Key Responsibilities AWS Engineering & Cloud Solutions . Design, build and maintain secure, resilient and scalable solutions on AWS. . Develop AWS infrastructure and services supporting application migration and SAP decommissioning activities. . Build cloud native and serverless solutions using appropriate AWS managed services. . Configure and manage services such as Lambda, API Gateway, S3, EC2, ECS, IAM, CloudWatch, EventBridge, SNS/SQS and related AWS services. . Design solutions considering availability, scalability, performance, security and cost optimisation. . Support the migration and transition of workloads and integrations away from legacy platforms into strategic cloud services. SAP Decommissioning Enablement . Work with SAP, application and architecture teams to understand legacy SAP dependencies, interfaces and downstream systems. . Enable technical solutions required to progressively decouple applications and services from legacy SAP platforms. . Support migration, extraction, archival and integration requirements associated with SAP system decommissioning. . Identify and resolve application, infrastructure and integration dependencies that could impact decommissioning. . Ensure replacement AWS services meet agreed functional and non functional requirements before legacy components are retired. . Support technical cutover, validation, hypercare and controlled retirement of legacy services. Infrastructure as Code & Automation . Build and maintain AWS infrastructure using Terraform and/or AWS CloudFormation. . Automate environment provisioning, configuration and deployment wherever possible. . Develop reusable infrastructure modules and patterns aligned with Centrica engineering standards. . Reduce manual operational activities through scripting and automation using Python, Bash and/or Node.js/TypeScript. DevOps & CI/CD . Build, maintain and improve CI/CD pipelines for application and infrastructure deployments. . Work with Git/GitHub and modern continuous integration and deployment practices. . Implement automated build, testing, security scanning and deployment controls. . Promote repeatable, auditable and low risk deployment processes across environments. . Contribute to continuous improvement of engineering and DevOps practices within the squad. Integration & Data . Design and support integrations between AWS services, enterprise applications and legacy/SAP platforms. . Develop and consume REST APIs and event driven interfaces. . Work with asynchronous messaging and event driven architecture patterns where appropriate. . Support secure movement, transformation and storage of data required during migration and decommissioning. . Collaborate with data and SAP teams to ensure data retention, archival and access requirements are addressed. Security, Monitoring & Operational Resilience . Implement AWS security best practices covering IAM, encryption, secrets management, network security and least privilege access. . Ensure solutions comply with Centrica security, data protection and technology standards. . Implement logging, monitoring, dashboards and alerting using AWS CloudWatch and enterprise monitoring tools. . Proactively identify reliability and performance issues. . Participate in incident investigation, root cause analysis and problem resolution. . Ensure appropriate operational documentation, runbooks and support procedures are maintained. Agile & Stakeholder Collaboration . Work as part of the UKI SAPDecomEnabler cross functional Agile squad. . Collaborate with Product Owners, Architects, SAP SMEs, Security, QA, DevOps and Operations teams. . Participate in sprint planning, backlog refinement, technical design discussions, stand ups and retrospectives. . Translate business and architectural requirements into robust technical solutions. . Raise technical risks, dependencies and blockers early and drive them through to resolution. . Participate in peer reviews and contribute to engineering standards and knowledge sharing. Mandatory Technical Skills . 5+ years of experience in software/cloud/infrastructure engineering. . Strong hands on experience with Amazon Web Services (AWS). . Practical experience with AWS services such as: Lambda API Gateway S3 EC2 / ECS IAM CloudWatch EventBridge SNS / SQS . Strong Infrastructure as Code experience using Terraform and/or CloudFormation. . Strong understanding of CI/CD and DevOps engineering practices. . Experience with Git/GitHub and automated deployment pipelines. . Programming/scripting experience using Python, Node.js/TypeScript and/or Bash. . Experience developing and integrating REST APIs. . Understanding of serverless and event driven architectures. . Experience with monitoring, logging, alerting and production support. . Strong understanding of cloud security, IAM and secure engineering principles. . Experience supporting production grade enterprise systems. Preferred Skills . Previous experience supporting SAP transformation, SAP migration or SAP decommissioning programmes. . Understanding of SAP interfaces, integration patterns and legacy application dependencies. . Experience migrating enterprise applications from legacy/on premises environments to AWS. . Experience with data migration, archival and retention solutions. . Knowledge of containers, Docker and Kubernetes/ECS. . Experience working within large enterprise technology transformation programmes. . Familiarity with SRE practices and highly available production services. . AWS certification such as AWS Certified Solutions Architect – Associate/Professional or AWS Certified Developer/DevOps Engineer would be advantageous. Behavioural Competencies . Reduce dependencies on legacy platforms through AWS based replacement capabilities. . Deliver secure and reusable cloud services and integration patterns. . Automate infrastructure provisioning and deployment. . Improve resilience, observability and maintainability of transitioned services. . Ensure migrated services are production ready before legacy components are retired. . Support Centrica's broader technology modernization and cloud transformation objectives.
