Job Title: Pipe Welders, Fitters & Riggers – New Project Location: Chennai Metro Stations Project: Fire Fighting Installation Project Department: Mechanical / Piping Reports To: Piping Supervisor / Construction Manager / Site Engineer Employment Type: Full-Time Sex: Male. No: of Vacancies: 69 plus Job Purpose To execute fabrication, installation, welding, and rigging works related to firefighting piping systems, ensuring all activities are performed safely, efficiently, and in compliance with approved drawings, specifications, and quality standards. The role involves close coordination among welders, fitters, and riggers to support the installation of piping networks, pumps, valves, and associated fire protection system components. Key Responsibilities Pipe Welders Perform Arc Welding for carbon steel, galvanized, and stainless-steel fire protection piping systems. Prepare, align, and weld joints as per approved WPS, project drawings, and NFPA standards. Conduct visual inspections of welds and coordinate with QA/QC for NDT testing where applicable. Maintain and calibrate welding equipment; ensure consumables are handled per specifications. Follow all site HSE regulations, fire safety, and hot work permit procedures. Pipe Fitters Read and interpret firefighting system drawings, isometrics, and schematics for accurate installation. Measure, cut, thread, and prepare pipes for fabrication and fit-up according to layout and design. Assemble and align pipes, fittings, supports, hangers, valves, and accessories. Conduct fit-up inspections prior to welding and ensure dimensional accuracy. Assist in hydrostatic pressure testing and ensure compliance with NFPA and project standards. Coordinate with welders and riggers to ensure smooth workflow and safe lifting/installation. Riggers Handle lifting, hoisting, and rigging operations for piping spools, valves, pumps, and fire protection equipment. Select appropriate lifting gear and inspect all tools (slings, shackles, wire ropes, hooks) prior to use. Signal and guide crane or lifting equipment operators during installation and erection activities. Ensure all lifting activities comply with site safety plans and rigging procedures. Maintain rigging logs and report unsafe conditions immediately. Qualifications and Experience Minimum 3–5 years of experience in piping installation within firefighting, mechanical, or MEP projects. Pipe Welders: Certified in relevant welding processes (SMAW) with experience in black steel and galvanized piping. Pipe Fitters: Skilled in layout, pipe cutting, threading, and fire protection system assembly. Riggers: Certified or trained in safe rigging and lifting operations. Familiarity with NFPA codes, local civil defence requirements, and project QA/QC standards preferred. Strong knowledge of HSE practices, fire watch procedures, and confined space work. Core Competencies Technical expertise in firefighting piping works Strong attention to detail and quality workmanship Adherence to safety and fire protection standards Effective communication and teamwork skills Ability to interpret technical drawings and perform work with minimal supervision Working Conditions Site-based role; work involves indoor and outdoor activities, elevated areas, and confined spaces.
