Carbon Credit Specialist – Job DescriptionPosition Summary A Carbon Credit Specialist is responsible for managing, assessing, and optimizing an organization’s carbon credit portfolio and sustainability initiatives. This role involves evaluating emission-reduction projects, ensuring regulatory compliance, supporting carbon offset transactions, and providing strategic guidance on market opportunities within voluntary and compliance carbon markets. Key ResponsibilitiesCarbon Market Analysis & Strategy Monitor global compliance and voluntary carbon markets, including pricing trends, regulatory shifts, and emerging methodologies. Recommend strategic buy/sell decisions to optimize carbon credit portfolios. Identify new opportunities for project development, partnerships, or investment in emission-reduction activities. Carbon Credit Evaluation & Verification Conduct technical assessments of carbon offset projects (e.g., renewable energy, forestry, methane reduction, blue carbon, nature-based solutions). Review project documentation such as PDDs (Project Design Documents) and Monitoring Reports. Oversee verification and validation processes with accredited third-party auditors (VVBs). Ensure credits meet quality criteria (additionality, permanence, leakage, MRV standards). Regulatory & Standards Compliance Ensure compliance with relevant standards and registries (e.g., Verra VCS, Gold Standard, ACR, CAR, CDM). Track climate policies, carbon pricing regimes, and sustainability reporting frameworks (e.g., GHG Protocol, SBTi, CSRD). Prepare documentation for audits, certification, and regulatory reviews. Transaction & Portfolio Management Support the procurement, trading, and retirement of carbon credits in both OTC and exchange-driven markets. Maintain accurate records of credit ownership, serialization, and retirement within registry systems. Coordinate with legal teams on contracts, risk assessments, and due diligence. Internal & External Collaboration Advise internal stakeholders on decarbonization strategies, emissions inventories, and sustainability goals. Work with project developers, brokers, and environmental consultants. Prepare client-facing reports and presentations summarizing project impact and market insights. Data Analysis & Reporting Manage greenhouse gas (GHG) emission data and create carbon footprint assessments. Produce analytical reports, dashboards, and forecasts. Support ESG reporting, corporate sustainability disclosures, and climate-related risk assessments. Required Qualifications Bachelor’s degree in Environmental Science, Sustainability, Economics, Engineering, or a related field. 2–5+ years of experience in carbon markets, sustainability consulting, or environmental compliance. Strong knowledge of carbon accounting methodologies and carbon offset standards. Experience working with carbon registries (Verra, Gold Standard, ACR, CDM, etc.). Excellent analytical, quantitative, and research skills. Ability to interpret technical documentation and regulatory guidelines. Preferred Qualifications Master’s degree in a related field. Professional certifications (e.g., ISO 14064, GHG auditor credentials, sustainability reporting certifications). Familiarity with nature-based offset methodologies and climate-tech solutions.
