Senior Design Engineer – Roles & Responsibilities (5–8 Years) Engineering / Manufacturing / Industrial Company Product & Component Design Lead design of mechanical parts, assemblies, and systems using CAD tools (SolidWorks / AutoCAD / CATIA /Creo, Etc). Develop 3D models, detailed 2D drawings, and technical specifications. Apply GD&T, tolerance stack-ups, and design for manufacturability (DFM). Engineering Calculations & Analysis Perform engineering calculations related to strength, load, materials, and performance. Conduct basic FEA or coordinate with analysis team for validation. Ensure designs meet safety, reliability, and industry standards. Project Ownership Manage complete design cycle from concept to production release. Prepare Bill of Materials (BOM), engineering change documents, and revision control. Support cost estimation and feasibility studies for new projects. Cross-Functional Collaboration Work closely with Production, Quality, Procurement, R&D, and Testing teams. Support manufacturing during prototype build, trials, and production ramp-up. Coordinate with suppliers for material selection, manufacturability, and technical queries. Problem Solving & Improvement Identify design issues, perform root cause analysis (RCA), and implement corrective actions. Drive design optimization, weight reduction, and cost-saving initiatives. Participate in FMEA, Kaizen, and continuous improvement activities. Prototype & Testing Support Assist in prototype assembly, functionality testing, validation, and documentation. Review test results and make necessary design modifications. Documentation & Compliance Prepare design reports, test reports, and design justification documents. Ensure compliance with industry standards (ISO, ASME, customer specs). Maintain complete engineering records in systems. Customer Interaction Participate in customer meetings to understand technical requirements. Provide design presentations, technical clarifications, and engineering solutions. Team Leadership Guide junior engineers and review their designs/drawings. Ensure adherence to engineering best practices and design guidelines.
