Description
The Senior Resident in General Surgery is expected to manage and assist in the surgical and non-surgical care of patients under the supervision of senior faculty. The role includes performing routine and emergency surgeries, managing pre-operative and post-operative care, and providing inpatient consultations for surgical patients. The Senior Resident will also be involved in academic activities, teaching, and research within the department. Key Responsibilities: Clinical Duties: Assist in performing routine and emergency surgeries including appendectomy, hernia repairs, cholecystectomy, and basic laparoscopic procedures. Conduct pre-operative assessments, including physical exams, laboratory tests, and patient education. Manage post-operative care, including wound dressing, monitoring recovery, and detecting complications early. Provide inpatient care, perform daily rounds, and participate in case discussions and treatment planning. Manage emergency surgery cases, including trauma, bowel perforations, and acute abdominal conditions. Participate in multidisciplinary meetings and provide input on surgical cases. Assist in minor surgical procedures like abscess drainage, biopsies, and wound debridement. Academic and Teaching Responsibilities: Participate in departmental teaching activities, including rounds, lectures, and workshops for undergraduate and postgraduate students. Help supervise junior residents and medical students during clinical rotations. Prepare and present case studies, journal articles, and participate in academic seminars. Engage in research activities and contribute to clinical trials, audits, and publications. Quality Control & Research: Maintain accurate and detailed medical records of all patients and ensure compliance with hospital protocols and ethical guidelines. Participate in clinical audits and contribute to the department's quality improvement initiatives. Stay updated with the latest trends in surgery, attend workshops, and actively engage in continuing medical education (CME). Key Skills and Competencies: Clinical and Surgical Skills: Strong understanding of basic and advanced general surgical principles and techniques. Proficiency in performing common surgeries and assisting in more complex procedures. Knowledge of sterile techniques, surgical safety protocols, and infection control. Ability to interpret diagnostic tests, imaging studies, and laboratory results relevant to surgical cases. Experience in managing post-operative care, including monitoring for complications and ensuring proper wound healing. Soft Skills: Strong communication skills to effectively interact with patients, families, and medical teams. Empathy and patient-centered approach to care. Ability to work in high-pressure, fast-paced environments, particularly in emergencies. Strong teamwork skills and ability to collaborate with consultants, specialists, and other medical staff. Good problem-solving abilities and critical thinking. Professional Skills : Familiarity with hospital management systems, EMRs (Electronic Medical Records), and surgical documentation. Ability to mentor and teach junior residents and medical students. Commitment to professional development, with an interest in surgical research and academic activities. Ability to engage in continuous learning to stay updated with the latest advancements in general surgery. Additional Competencies: Ability to work independently and make decisions under supervision. Good organizational and time-management skills. Willingness to take on call duties and work during odd hours or emergency situations as required.
