Hours

37.5 hours per week, with participation in an out-of-hours support rota

The role

You will design, programme, modify, test and commission PLC, HMI and SCADA systems on utility and industrial assets. You will work from functional design through to site acceptance and handover, and you will leave every system documented, secure and supportable. The Senior engineer leads projects and engineers. The Junior engineer delivers engineering work packages under Senior guidance, while building towards lead responsibility.

Key responsibilities — both grades

• Develop and modify PLC software on major platforms such as Allen Bradley (Studio 5000), Schneider, following IEC 61131-3 good practice and client standards.
• Build and modify HMI applications on platforms such as FactoryTalk View, WinCC and EcoStruxure Operator Terminal Expert.
• Configure SCADA and telemetry systems and RTU outstations.
• Configure and fault-find industrial networks and protocols, including EtherNet/IP, Modbus TCP/RTU, Profibus/Profinet, DNP3 and OPC UA.
• Produce and work to engineering documents: functional design specifications, I/O schedules, test plans, FAT/SAT records.
• Carry out factory acceptance testing, site acceptance testing and commissioning, including end-to-end loop and signal testing through to SCADA.
• Diagnose and resolve control system faults on operational sites, often under time pressure, with minimal disruption to the process.
• Work safely on live operational sites under permit-to-work systems, following RAMS, isolation and site hygiene rules.
• Apply OT cyber security practice in line with IEC 62443 and client security standards, including access control, backups and change management.
• Keep accurate records of work, versions and changes in quality management system.

Additional responsibilities — Senior grade

• Lead projects technically from enquiry and design to handover, including scoping, estimating and technical risk management.
• Write and approve functional design specifications and software designs, and set the technical approach for each project.
• Act as the main technical contact for client engineers and operations teams.
• Supervise, mentor and review the work of Junior engineers, including code reviews and test witnessing.
• Write and review RAMS for commissioning and site testing activities.
• Drive continuous improvement in engineering standards, templates and libraries.

Additional responsibilities — Junior grade

• Deliver allocated engineering work packages (software, HMI screens, SCADA configuration, testing) to programme and quality standards.
• Support Senior engineers during FAT, SAT and commissioning, and take ownership of defined test activities.
• Prepare test records, I/O lists and as-built documentation.
• Develop towards lead engineer competence through structured training and mentoring.
