About the role

Senior BI Consultant

The role is client-facing and hands-on. You will analyse the existing OBIEE logic, build and test the models, build the reports, and run releases through Git and deployment pipelines.

Key responsibilities

You will own each subject area from OBIEE analysis through to production release.

1. Analyse the OBIEE RPD, web catalog and usage statistics, and document the physical, business model and presentation layer logic, including aggregation rules, level-based measures, data filters and session variables.

2. Design star-schema semantic models in Power BI and Fabric that replace the RPD, and agree measure definitions with the client's business owners.

3. Build the models: Power Query connections to on-premises Oracle through the enterprise data gateway, relationships, DAX measures, hierarchies, calculation groups, perspectives and row-level security driven by Entra ID groups.

4. Choose and tune Import, DirectQuery or composite mode per subject area, including aggregations, refresh schedules and query performance.

5. Work with the client's DBA to recreate RPD custom SQL as Oracle views and to set up read-only access.

6. Rebuild OBIEE analyses and dashboards as Power BI reports, and BI Publisher output as paginated reports; publish apps and audiences.

7. Reconcile numbers against OBIEE, investigate and explain differences, and support client sign-off per subject area.

8. Manage releases with Git (PBIP/TMDL) and deployment pipelines across Dev, Test and Prod, and monitor refresh and capacity.

9. Document the models and train client users and developers so the client can run them after hand-over.

Must-have skills

The candidate should be strong in the first three areas and competent in the rest.

Power BI semantic modelling and DAX

Advanced DAX including time intelligence and calculation groups; star-schema design; row-level security; Import, DirectQuery and composite models; performance tuning with DAX Studio and Tabular Editor

OBIEE

Reads and explains an RPD (physical, business model and mapping, presentation layers); logical columns and aggregation rules; level-based and time-series measures; data filters, session variables and init blocks; Answers and dashboards

Oracle and SQL

Advanced Oracle SQL and PL/SQL; reads and rewrites RPD custom SQL as views; query tuning and execution plans; read-only access and security basics

Power BI reporting

Report design on shared models; paginated reports (Report Builder); apps, audiences and Analyze in Excel; usability and governance of certified models

Microsoft Fabric and Power BI service

Workspaces, capacities, on-premises data gateway setup and troubleshooting, scheduled refresh, Entra ID groups, Git integration (PBIP/TMDL) and deployment pipelines

Delivery and communication

Works directly with business users and technical teams; writes clear documentation; plans and tests work by subject area; explains differences between OBIEE and Power BI numbers in plain language

Nice-to-have skills

• Hands-on experience migrating from OBIEE, OAS or OAC (or another BI platform such as Cognos or BusinessObjects) to Power BI.
• Microsoft Fabric Lakehouse or Warehouse, Data Factory pipelines and OneLake, for later phases that move data off Oracle.
• dbt or another SQL transformation framework.
• Python or PowerShell for automating checks, for example comparing OBIEE and Power BI outputs.
• Experience with Power BI Premium or Fabric capacity sizing and monitoring.
