About Kalpla
Kalpla is an all in one education platform. Students take live and recorded courses, sit graded assessments and earn certificates. Instructors run their classes and track their learners through the same system. We are a focused engineering team, and work shipped here reaches real students within days.
About the role
We are expanding our in house mobile engineering capability, and this role takes ownership of the Kalpla mobile application.
The mobile application is your primary responsibility. Mobile delivery is not continuous, however, and there will be periods when the application is stable and the feature queue is light. In those periods you will contribute to our web platform. We are therefore looking for an engineer who is genuinely capable across both, and who treats breadth as part of the craft. Candidates seeking a mobile only remit will not be a fit for this position.
Role and responsibilities
Mobile application (primary)
1. Design, build and ship features across the student experience, covering courses, live classes, assessments, cart and checkout, wallet and certificates, as well as the instructor tools.
2. Own the release process end to end, including build generation, over the air updates and submission to the Google Play Store and the Apple App Store.
3. Maintain and extend the parts of the application that depend on native modules, including WebRTC based live classes, call handling and payment gateway integration.
4. Uphold code quality through our established checks: TypeScript, linting, unit tests and end to end test flows.
5. Investigate and resolve production defects reported by QA, support and our users, with clear root cause analysis.
6. Work directly with the designer on interaction and visual detail, and with QA on test coverage before release.
Web platform (secondary, as required)
Frontend
1. Build and maintain features in our Next.js application using TypeScript, React and Tailwind CSS.
2. Implement responsive, accessible interfaces that handle loading, empty and error states properly, not only the success path.
3. Manage client side data fetching, caching and form validation using our established patterns.
Backend
1. Build and modify REST API endpoints in our NestJS application, following the existing module, controller and service structure, with validated request and response shapes.
2. Write and optimise database queries against PostgreSQL through Prisma, and understand the cost of the queries you write.
3. Propose and implement schema changes through reviewed migrations.
4. Keep the shared type contract between the API and its clients in step with every change to a response shape.
5. Apply sound authentication and authorisation practice to every endpoint you touch.
We expect you to be able to deliver a web feature in full: the API endpoint, the database access behind it, and the interface that consumes it.
Required qualifications
1. 2 or more years building and shipping production React Native applications, preferably with Expo.
2. Strong command of TypeScript and modern React, including hooks, component composition and state management.
3. Demonstrated ownership of mobile releases. You must have personally taken an application through signing, build and submission to both the Google Play Store and the Apple App Store.
4. Practical backend experience with Node.js, including REST API design, relational database modelling and query writing.
5. Working knowledge of SQL and an ORM.
6. Sound understanding of token based authentication, session refresh and the failure modes that accompany them.
7. Proficiency with Git and a disciplined pull request and code review workflow.
8. The ability to debug across the stack, from the client through the API to the database, and to state a root cause with evidence.
Preferred qualifications
1. Expo EAS build, submit and update pipelines, and config plugins.
2. NestJS and Prisma.
3. Next.js App Router.
4. Real time systems, including WebRTC or Socket.io.
5. Payment gateway SDK integration on mobile.
6. Tailwind CSS, and NativeWind on the mobile side.
7. Automated testing with Jest, React Native Testing Library or an end to end mobile framework.
8. Prior work in education technology.
What success looks like
1. Within 30 days: you are productive in the mobile codebase, have shipped your first defect fixes to production, and have run the release pipeline yourself.
2. Within 60 days: you are delivering mobile features independently, and have completed your first web platform ticket spanning both the API and the interface.
3. Within 90 days: you are the owner of the mobile application, accountable for its release cadence, stability and store presence.
