Job Description

What we are looking for:

Product Validation Engineer

You will work closely with design, firmware, and manufacturing teams to ensure that all of BRIGHTBLUs products meet functional, environmental, and regulatory standards. This role is crucial for ensuring that our EV charging solutions meet the highest standards of performance, safety, and durability.

You will take on the following Job responsibilities:

1. Test Planning & Execution

  • Develop and execute hardware validation plans for AC and DC EV chargers, covering power electronics, control systems, and communication interfaces.
  • Define test cases, validation strategies, and pass/fail criteria based on design requirements and industry standards.
  • Conduct manual and automated testing for functional, electrical, and environmental validation.
  • Use the DFMEA to prioritize validation of high-risk failure modes, and feed test findings back into it.

2. Hardware Functional & Performance Testing

  • Validate new PCBs, prototypes, power electronics & protection circuits designed by the hardware R&D team.
  • Test thermal behavior, cooling mechanisms, and heat dissipation of different components.
  • Perform dynamic load testing to simulate different EV charging scenarios.
  • Conduct charger-level (system) tests on complete units, including end-to-end charging sessions with EVs and EV simulators, endurance, and burn-in testing.
  • Perform environmental and reliability testing such as IP (ingress protection) rating, temperature and humidity cycling, and vibration.

3. Communication & Protocol Validation

  • Test EV-to-charger communication for compliance with ISO 15118, DIN 70121, and IEC 61851, and charger-to-backend communication for OCPP compliance.
  • Validate Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, Ethernet, and LTE connectivity for cloud integration.
  • Run interoperability tests with the range of EV models available in the market.

4. Compliance & Regulatory Testing

  • Conduct EMC/EMI testing to ensure chargers meet global regulatory standards.
  • Perform electrical safety testing to verify overvoltage, overcurrent, short-circuit, earthing, insulation resistance and other electrical protections.
  • Manage product certification with external labs such as TV and ARAI: prepare samples and technical documentation, coordinate test schedules, witness testing, and close out any non-conformities.
  • Carry out in-house pre-compliance testing (EMC and electrical safety) before units go to external labs, to avoid failed lab cycles.
  • Maintain certification records, test reports, and certificates, and flag when a design change requires re-certification.
  • Support certification for export markets (CE, UL, IEC) as required.

5. Failure Analysis & Debugging

  • Investigate hardware failures, identify root causes, and propose corrective actions.
  • Work with R&D and manufacturing teams to resolve design issues before mass production.
  • Use oscilloscopes, multimeters, thermal cameras, and spectrum analyzers to debug circuits.

6. Test Automation & Data Analysis

  • Develop automated test setups and jigs to improve testing efficiency.
  • Maintain detailed test reports, root cause analysis reports, logs, and documentation for regulatory compliance.
  • Maintain a Design Verification Plan & Report (DVP&R) for each product, showing every requirement, how it was tested, and the result.
  • Log defects in the issue tracker and follow each one through to verified closure.
  • Analyze field data trends to predict failure modes and improve product reliability.

7. Collaboration with Cross-functional Teams

  • Work closely with Hardware, Software, and Production Engineering teams to refine charger designs and production processes.
  • Feed back validation findings and design improvement recommendations to the hardware design team, covering performance and thermal margins, component stress and derating, manufacturability, and testability, so they are built into the next revision.
  • Support manufacturing and quality teams in resolving production and field failures.
  • Hand over validated designs to production with end-of-line test specifications and limits, working with the Production & Quality Engineer at the Goa plant.

8. Continuous Improvement & Innovation

  • Contribute to design for validation (DFV) and design for testing (DFT) strategies.
  • Explore new test methodologies, automation tools, and validation techniques.
  • Keep up to date with emerging EV charging technologies and industry regulations.

9. Firmware Release Validation

  • Validate new firmware releases on target hardware before release, covering new features and regression testing of existing ones.
  • Verify over-the-air (OTA) updates, including rollback and recovery from a failed update.
  • Issue a release test report and validation sign-off for each firmware version.

10. Hardware Version Control

  • Maintain a register of PCB and hardware revisions, recording the BOM version, changes, and validation status of each.
  • Maintain the firmwarehardware compatibility matrix, so every firmware release is mapped to the hardware revisions it supports.
  • Ensure every prototype and test sample is labelled with its hardware and firmware revision.

11. Validation Lab Management

  • Maintain the inventory of lab equipment, prototypes, test samples, and EV simulators.
  • Plan calibration and maintenance of test equipment, and keep calibration records current.
  • Enforce lab safety practices, especially for high-voltage and high-power testing.
  • Identify and justify new test equipment needs as the product range grows.

You will report directly to the Head of Product.

Key Performance Indicators (KPIs):

  • Validation plans and test reports completed on schedule for each prototype, PCB revision, and firmware release.
  • Defects caught in validation versus defects that escape to production or the field.
  • First-time pass rate at external certification labs.
  • No critical firmware regressions reaching the field.
  • Time to close defects raised during validation.
  • Accuracy of hardware revision records and the firmwarehardware compatibility matrix.
  • Lab equipment calibrated on schedule, with no lapses.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in electronics/ electrical/ embedded systems engineering.
  • Experience: 4-6 years in electronics or electrical domain.
  • Familiarity with a wide range of electronic and electrical hardware devices.
  • Strong understanding of electronic circuits and reading PCB schematics and layouts.
  • Proficient in using test equipment (Multimeter, oscilloscopes, etc) and soldering electronic components.
  • Strong understanding of embedded software testing.
  • Understanding of EMI/EMC.
  • Working knowledge of EV charging standards such as IEC 61851, IS 17017, ISO 15118, and OCPP.
  • Familiarity with power electronics and high-voltage safety practices.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.

Preferred Skills:

  • Experience working with external test and certification labs such as TV and ARAI.
  • Scripting for test automation, such as Python or LabVIEW.
  • Hands-on experience with EV simulators and protocol analysers for ISO 15118 and DIN 70121.
  • Exposure to DVP&R, DFMEA, and automotive-style validation practices.
