Job Summary The Head, Editorial and Production Services will lead Thieme India’s business unit that provides contracted editorial/production services on journals and related products to global Group affiliates. This senior-level position will involve the management of overall performance, TAT and quality in services (including departmental budget/P&L targets), while working in close collaboration with Thieme global stakeholders and, as needed, liaising with vendor partners in cohesion with Thieme’s central vendor management function. A significant part of the role will involve leading transformation and lean practice in the team with a practical focus on efficiency, productivity and automation. This role will report to the Managing Director (Country Head), India and will also have the potential to support the local business operationally, particularly driving gains through standardization and process improvement in suitable areas. Roles & Responsibilities Direct overall performance of contracted services (journals production, project management, editorial office services, copy editing, etc.) provided to Thieme Group entities. Apply lean methods for process improvement; identify opportunities for process automation and digitalization to enhance operational efficiency, customer satisfaction, and reduce manual effort. Offer authority and guidance, in line with Thieme’s leadership culture principles, to line managers and individual contributors within the team. Lead implementation of transparent, end-to-end workflows and frameworks; monitor all phases of the content publishing process (end to end, from acceptance to production) based on defined key performance indicators (KPIs) around TAT, quality and pricing. Accountable for: departmental budget/P&L and pricing of services; annual volume/workflow plans, made in liaison with global stakeholders; adherence to SLAs; staffing, resourcing and skilling plans. Conduct a systematic review of performance with headquarters to enhance overall effectiveness and better compliance with processes and workflow (in line with targets, KPIs, and specified deadlines and costs). Create a communication framework with pertinent stakeholders across the global matrix Required Background & skills: Skills profile Highly proficient in the processing of science journal articles Six-Sigma-trained lean practitioner with data-driven approach Proficiency and willingness to engage in intercultural cooperation Strong communication and reasoning skills Understanding of priorities and requirements related to OA publishing Knowledge of latest publishing tools and systems People-first approach, ability to delegate and develop team members Desired work experience Significant experience, including at a managerial role in mid- to large-sized teams, in academic publishing or publishing services, preferably within a global matrix structure Demonstrable track record of continuous improvement approach Demonstrable experience in lean and automation projects in publishing or publishing services (project leadership experience desirable). Prior role/s involving hands-on experience in journals production management in a fast-paced environment Understanding of emerging trends and requirements in STM publishing in areas like project management, open access, TAT reduction, editorial office functions, peer review, research integrity, etc. Experience in client or account management at individual or contributory level. Experience in wider business or administrative operations an added advantage. We are seeking a highly motivated Sr./Development Editor to join our medical content team. This role is critical in shaping high-quality educational resources, including print and digital textbooks, clinical references, and multimedia learning products for medical students and professionals. As a Development Editor, you will collaborate with authors, subject matter experts (SMEs), and production teams to enhance content accuracy, structure, and engagement. You will ensure our products align with competency-based medical education (CBME) guidelines while driving innovation in digital learning. Roles & Responsibilities Content Development & Editorial Oversight Responsible for ensuring the successful development and on-time publication of assigned print and digital product supplements. Develop content considering the end-user’s requirement by involving in-house manuscript evaluation, editing, and reformatting. Perform competitive analysis of textbooks & learning materials to recommend improvements. Ensure content meets quality benchmarks for clarity, medical accuracy, and reader engagement. The editor ensures that content meets editorial goals and technical production standards and collaborates with Production to publish the final product successfully. Collaboration with Authors & Key Opinion Leaders (KOLs) Work closely with authors, faculty, and KOLs to ensure content clarity, accuracy, and completeness. Understand the author’s vision and goals for the book and provide guidance and support throughout development. Communicate effectively with authors, offering feedback and recommendations. Assist authors in training and promotional activities in collaboration with the marketing team. Manuscript Review & Content Refinement Assess the manuscript’s overall structure and flow of content. Compare and analyze the manuscript at various stages with existing competition and provide constructive feedback to the author. Identify copyrighted material, pedagogical features, and assist the author in obtaining permissions. Identify and address manuscript weaknesses, such as lack of focus, missing pedagogical features, non-alignment with curriculum needs. Suggest revisions, additions, or deletions to improve the quality and coherence of the book. Ensure the content is accurate, engaging, and relevant to the target audience. Assess ancillary digital materials (videos, interactive modules) for print as well as digital products in alignment with the organization’s vision. Digital Content & Multimedia Integration Assist in adapting print content for digital platforms. Work with design and tech teams to integrate videos and digital content. Ensure content is compatible with digital learning tools and supports modern pedagogy. Development Execution Monitor manuscript schedules, budgets, and production timelines to ensure timely delivery. Manage the development process, ensuring deadlines are met and the book stays on track for publication. Collaborate with the editorial team, including copyeditors, proofreaders, and designers to resolve queries and ensure timely delivery. Liaise with freelancers, illustrators, and subject editors to maintain high editorial standards. Collaborate with freelancers and SMEs to provide input, review their work, and ensure output aligns with agreed standards. The editor monitors the schedules and budgets of projects to ensure they publish on time and within budget. Cross-Functional Collaboration Work closely with cross-functional teams like marketing and sales to enhance promotional activities. Help the marketing team create comparisons with competitive books and products. Engage authors in promotional efforts, ensuring strong faculty endorsements. Required Background & skills: Good written and verbal communication skills. A sound understanding of medical subjects along with exposure to digital publishing. Bachelor’s / Master’s Degree in Medicine or life sciences. 5-8 years of experience in a similar role. Familiarity with medical curricula, CBME guidelines, and digital learning trends. Experience in working with authors, editors, and production teams in a publishing setting.
