We're seeking a Founding Software Engineer to lead the development of our next-generation payroll and compliance product. This is a unique opportunity to join our founding technology team and build a product from the ground up that will transform how Australian businesses manage payroll and compliance. As one of our first engineering hires, you'll have significant autonomy and impact in shaping both our technology stack and engineering culture. You'll work closely with our experienced operations team, who deeply understand the pain points and complexities of Australian payroll and compliance requirements. Responsibilities Core Payroll Engine: Develop robust payroll processing systems handling Australian tax calculations, superannuation, leave accruals, and award interpretations. Compliance Automation: Build automated compliance workflows for STP (Single Touch Payroll), ATO reporting, Fair Work requirements, and state-based obligations. Integration Platform: Create seamless integrations with popular accounting software, HRIS systems, and government reporting platforms. User Interface: Design intuitive dashboards and workflows for both payroll administrators and employees. API Infrastructure: Develop scalable APIs that can handle high-volume payroll processing and real-time compliance checking. Product Development: Lead end-to-end development of payroll and compliance features from conception to deployment. Architecture Design: Make critical decisions about technology stack, system architecture, and development practices. Compliance Integration: Work closely with our compliance experts to translate complex Australian regulations into automated software solutions. Quality Assurance: Establish robust testing practices, ensuring accuracy in financial calculations and regulatory compliance. Strong proficiency in modern backend technologies (Node.js, Python, Java, or Go). Experience with cloud platforms (AWS, Azure, or GCP). Database design and optimization (PostgreSQL, MongoDB, or similar). RESTful API design and development. Understanding of software security principles and data protection. Experience with version control (Git) and CI/CD practices. Highly Desirable Previous experience with fintech, payroll, or compliance software. Knowledge of Australian payroll regulations and tax systems. Experience with microservices architecture. Frontend development skills (React, Vue.js, or Angular).
