This role ensures that books, magazines, digital publications, and marketing materials meet design standards, print specifications, and production requirements. The Technical Designer acts as a key link between editorial, creative, and printing vendors. Key Responsibilities 1. Layout & Technical File Preparation Create and refine print-ready layouts for books, eBooks, magazines, and marketing collateral. Prepare master templates, style sheets, and grids for consistent formatting. Ensure all artwork, typography, margins, bleeds, and colour profiles meet print standards. 2. Collaboration across Teams Work closely with Director, authors, Client, and production roles. Translate creative concepts into technically viable designs while maintaining brand guidelines. Coordinate with external printers, typesetters, and vendors to resolve technical issues. 3. Quality Control & Proofing Conduct thorough pre-flight checks on final files before sending to print. Review test prints or digital proofs to ensure accuracy in colour, alignment, and layout. Identify and correct errors in formatting, typography, images, and pagination. 4. Digital Publishing Support Create eBook files (EPUB, MOBI, PDF) using industry-standard tools. Optimize layouts for digital reading platforms and ensure accessibility compliance. Handle technical troubleshooting for digital assets and interactive content. 5. Documentation & Standards Maintain updated production specifications and design guidelines. Create documentation for file naming, colour management, formats, and workflow processes. Record and manage version control for all publication files. Required Skills & Qualifications Bachelor’s degree in Graphic Design, Publishing, Visual Communication, or related field. Proficiency in industry tools: o Adobe InDesign o Photoshop & Illustrator o Acrobat Pre-flight o eBook tools (e.g., InDesign EPUB export, Sigil, Kindle Previewer) Strong understanding of print production processes, colour management (CMYK/RGB), paper types, and binding methods. Excellent typography, layout, and composition skills. Ability to troubleshoot technical issues in design or production files. Solid understanding of, prepress, and digital publishing standards. Strong eye for typography, layout, and visual detail. Bonus Skills Experience working in a publishing house, print media, or typesetting environment. Familiarity with XML/HTML for digital publishing workflows. Knowledge of accessibility standards (WCAG/EPUB Accessibility).
