Backend Engineer

SanatanSevaSetu is hiring a Backend Engineer to build and maintain the APIs, database and business logic behind our web platform and mobile apps.

Location: Express Zone, Goregaon (East), Mumbai

Work mode: Work from office

Engagement: Full-time, 1-year fixed-term contract, including a 3-month probation period

About SanatanSevaSetu

SanatanSevaSetu is a multi-temple devotional platform where people can book pujas, make chadhava offerings, consult astrologers, receive prasad at home and follow the daily panchang.

Our backend connects discovery, bookings, payments, fulfilment, apps & web-apps and notifications. We are looking for someone who can translate these business flows into reliable APIs, maintain accurate data and help keep the platform running smoothly.

Your Profile

· Take ownership of backend features from design and development through deployment, monitoring and optimization, working closely with the app, web-app, product and design teams.

· Build and maintain backend services using Python, Go (Golang) for temple discovery, puja and chadhava bookings, payments, orders and user accounts.

· Design clear API contracts and backend architectures that evolve with business needs while remaining simple, maintainable and resilient.

· Implement reliable booking and payment workflows, including availability, concurrent requests, verified webhooks, duplicate prevention, cancellations, refunds and reconciliation.

· Design and maintain relational databases with sound schemas, constraints, indexes, transactions and migrations. Support backup and restore procedures.

· Build reliable background jobs and notifications with retries and failure tracking. Support service completion and prasad fulfilment workflows where applicable.

· Develop APIs for authorized staff to manage offerings, bookings and operational exceptions, with appropriate permissions and audit trails.

· Improve API and database performance using logs, metrics, error tracking and actionable alerts. Investigate production issues and resolve their underlying causes.

· Write clean, tested and secure code, contribute to code reviews and technical discussions, and maintain API documentation, design notes and operational runbooks.

Your Checklist

· Around 2 or more years of hands-on backend development experience is a guide, not a strict requirement. You can explain your contribution to real projects and the technical decisions you made.

· Proficiency in one or more backend languages such as Python, Go (Golang), Java or JavaScript/TypeScript with Node.js. Practical experience with relevant frameworks such as FastAPI, Django, Flask, Gin, Echo, Spring Boot. You do not need experience with every language or framework listed.

· Experience designing REST APIs with clear contracts, pagination, authentication, validation and consistent error handling.

· Practical SQL and PostgreSQL or MySQL experience, including data modelling, relationships, transactions, indexes, query tuning and migrations.

· Understanding of data structures, system design and performance optimization, with the ability to explain high-level architecture and detailed implementation choices.

· Experience integrating payment gateways or other third-party APIs, including webhooks, retries and safe handling of repeated requests or partial failures.

· Understanding of concurrency, asynchronous processing, background jobs, application monitoring, deployment fundamentals and troubleshooting live systems.

· Comfort with Git, collaborative workflows, code reviews and meaningful automated tests using tools appropriate to your stack, such as pytest, Go’s testing package or Jest.

· Understanding of authentication, roles and permissions, secrets management and protection of personal data.

· Clear communication, practical problem-solving and a willingness to automate repetitive work and improve reliability as the platform grows.

Good to have

· Experience with Redis, caching and job queues such as Celery or similar tools.

· Familiarity with Docker, Linux, CI/CD and cloud hosting such as AWS, GCP or DigitalOcean.

· Experience with tools such as Sentry, Prometheus, Grafana or the ELK stack.

· Experience reading query plans and improving PostgreSQL performance.

· Experience with booking, marketplace, payments or e-commerce systems.

· Responsible use of AI tools for development, testing and documentation, with independent verification of generated work.

Data security and confidentiality

You may work with user information, booking records and payment-related data. You will be expected to:

· Use only authorized systems and follow least-privilege access rules.

· Keep credentials and secrets out of source code.

· Avoid copying production data to personal devices or personal cloud storage.

· Keep production data and credentials out of unapproved AI tools.

· Report suspected data exposure or security incidents immediately through the designated internal channel.

· Follow the company’s confidentiality, access-control and data-security policies.
