Assistant Manager- Materials (Automotive Manufacturing)

Key Responsibilities

A. Purchase & Vendor Development

 Manage procurement of production materials, maintenance spares, MRO items, and

consumables as per plant requirements.

 Float RFQs, analyse quotations, prepare cost comparisons, evaluate landed costs,

negotiate commercial terms, and recommend suitable vendors.

 Coordinate product and part development at vendor locations in collaboration with

Production, Engineering, and Quality teams.

 Develop alternate vendors and sourcing options to improve cost competitiveness

and ensure supply continuity.

 Manage purchase price revisions, commercial settlements, and supplementary

debit/credit notes arising from rate differences and other adjustments.

 Monitor vendor performance in terms of cost, quality, delivery adherence, and

responsiveness.

B. Material Planning & Supply Scheduling

 Prepare material requirement plans based on production schedules, consumption

trends, BOM requirements, and available inventory.

 Coordinate with Production, Purchase, and Stores to ensure material availability as

per production priorities.

 Schedule material receipts and regularly follow up with vendors for timely supplies,

including escalation of critical shortages.

 Communicate delivery schedules and commitments to vendors through formal

written communication and regular follow-ups.

 Identify supply risks and coordinate approved alternate materials or sources to

minimize production disruptions.

C. Inventory & Store Management

 Manage material receipt, verification, storage, identification, material routing,

issuance, and traceability.

 Reconcile ERP/system stock against physical inventory through periodic stock

verification and cycle counting; investigate and resolve discrepancies.

 Establish and monitor minimum–maximum stock levels, reorder points, and safety

stock for production materials, maintenance spares, and consumables.

 Monitor slow-moving, non-moving, excess, obsolete, and rejected inventory and

initiate corrective actions.

 Ensure systematic storage, FIFO practices wherever applicable, proper

housekeeping, and effective implementation of 5S across store areas.

 Maintain accurate records of material receipts, issues, returns, transfers, and stock

adjustments.

D. Rejection & Job-Work Reconciliation

 Monitor rejected and non-conforming materials and coordinate with Quality,

Purchase, Production, and vendors for segregation, replacement, return, and

disposition.

 Reconcile job-work materials by tracking quantities sent to vendors, quantities

received, consumption, scrap, and pending balances.

 Investigate material shortages, excess consumption, and reconciliation differences

and ensure timely closure with concerned stakeholders.

E. MIS & Cost Optimization

 Prepare MIS reports on inventory accuracy, material shortages, supplier

performance, purchase cost savings, rejected materials, and pending job-work

reconciliation.

 Identify opportunities to reduce procurement costs, optimize inventory holding,

improve material availability, and streamline store operations.

 Ensure compliance with internal purchase procedures, inventory controls,

documentation requirements, and approval processes.

Qualification & Experience

 B.E./B.Tech. or equivalent qualification.

 6–9 years of relevant experience in Purchase, Material Planning, Inventory Control,

and Store Management.

 Automotive manufacturing industry experience is mandatory.

 Experience in handling plant-level material management, vendor coordination, and

ERP-based purchase and inventory transactions.

Required Skills

 Strong understanding of automotive manufacturing material flows, procurement,

and plant stores operations.

 Hands-on experience in RFQ management, vendor negotiations, cost comparison,

and landed cost evaluation.

 Good knowledge of material planning, inventory optimization, stock reconciliation,

and job-work accounting.

 Working knowledge of ERP systems, preferably SAP, and MS Excel.

 Strong analytical, commercial, coordination, and problem-solving skills.
