Job Overview

We are seeking a Writer/Journalist Intern who is passionate about storytelling, community engagement, and journalism. This role will focus on creating, curating, and re-writing content relevant to the Non-Resident Indian (NRI) and diaspora communities. The intern will gain hands-on experience in digital journalism, content strategy, and online media while building a professional portfolio.

We are seeking a passionate and dedicated Journalist to join our dynamic team. The ideal candidate will have a strong background in journalism, with excellent writing and communication skills in English and a command in the English language. This role involves researching, writing, and editing news articles, features, and multimedia content across various platforms. The Journalist will be responsible for delivering accurate and engaging stories that inform and captivate our audience.

Duties

• Research, write, and edit articles for different sections of Very Desi, with emphasis on the NRI/Diaspora Indian community in the US and Canada.
• Re-write and adapt existing articles from reliable sources to fit Very Desi’s style and audience.
• Cover a wide range of topics including:
• Immigration news and policies affecting NRIs
• Bollywood and entertainment updates
• Lifestyle and cultural stories of the diaspora
• Community events and profiles
• Collaborate with the editorial team to brainstorm story ideas and ensure content accuracy.
• Meet deadlines and maintain consistency in voice and tone.
• Follow ethical journalism practices, including proper attribution of sources.
• Research and investigate news stories to provide accurate and timely information.
• Write compelling articles in English in accordance with AP style guidelines.
• Conduct interviews with sources to gather insights and quotes for stories.
• Edit and proofread content to ensure clarity, accuracy, and adherence to publication standards.
• Manage social media accounts to promote stories and engage with the audience.
• Capture high-quality photographs and videos to complement written content.
• Collaborate with editors and other team members to develop story ideas and formats.
• Fact-check information before publication to maintain journalistic integrity.
• Utilize video production skills for creating engaging multimedia content.
• Stay updated on current events and trends relevant to the publication's focus.

Experience
Candidates should possess a degree in Journalism or a related field, along with relevant experience in writing, editing, or reporting. Preferred qualifications include:

• Proficiency in AP style.
• Currently pursuing or recently completed a degree in Journalism, Communications, English, International Studies, or a related field.
• Strong writing and editing skills in English; familiarity with Hindi, Tamil, Telugu, Kannada, Malayalam, Marati or other Indian languages is a plus.
• Knowledge of Indian culture, diaspora issues, and/or Bollywood/immigration news strongly preferred.
• Ability to conduct research and fact-check sources.
• Comfortable working independently and remotely.
• Attention to detail, creativity, and commitment to deadlines.
• Strong photography skills for capturing images that enhance storytelling.
• Bilingual abilities are a plus for reaching diverse audiences.
• Experience in video production and videography for creating visual content.
• Solid research skills to support fact-checking efforts.
• Familiarity with social media management for effective audience engagement.
• Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal.
