Tool Maker

Role & responsibilities

• Design, construct, fit, and assemble complex, precision tooling (progressive dies, injection molds, jigs, fixtures) from engineering blueprints, CAD models, and technical specifications.
• Select appropriate materials (tool steel, carbides, aluminum) for tooling based on process requirements, lifespan, and material properties.
• Utilize advanced metrology and precision measuring instruments (micrometers, calipers, height gauges, CMM, optical comparators) to ensure all components meet the specified dimensional requirements and adhere to tight tolerances.
• Read, interpret, and apply Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing (GD&T) principles to verify tool accuracy.
• Perform preventative maintenance, troubleshooting, and scheduled/unscheduled repairs on production tooling to maximize uptime and operational efficiency.
• Diagnose tool failures and wear patterns, performing root cause analysis and implementing permanent corrective actions (welding, grinding, replacement of inserts/components).
• Conduct tool trials and test runs to validate functionality and ensure parts produced meet quality standards before releasing the tool back to production.
• Collaborate closely with Manufacturing, Production, and Design Engineers to review and refine tool designs for optimal manufacturability, cost efficiency, and reduced cycle times (Design for Tooling/DFM).
• Recommend and implement tool modifications and improvements to enhance product quality, safety, and production speed.
• Document all tool design changes, maintenance performed, and performance history accurately in the tooling database.
• Adhere strictly to all company safety procedures and maintain a clean, organized, and safe work environment using 5S methodology.

Preferred candidate profile

• Education:

  CIPET, CTTC and NTTF

• Experience:

  Minimum of 3 - 5 years of hands-on experience as a Journeyman Tool Maker, Tool and Die Maker, or a related precision machining role in a manufacturing environment.

• Expert proficiency in setting up and operating manual and CNC machine tools (mills, lathes, grinders).
• Strong ability to read and interpret complex engineering drawings, schematics, and GD&T callouts.
• In-depth knowledge of metal properties, heat treatment processes, and surface finishing techniques.
