Job Description

· To conduct environmental study of Operation Theatres, Intensive Care Units, and other critical areas as per schedule. · Daily completion of proforma for infected patients in all the ICUs. · To compile ICUs infection data as per the proforma on a daily basis. · To periodically monitor the use of disinfectants. · To regularly monitor Infection Control Practices. · To investigate outbreaks. · To carry out any other assignment as assigned by Infection Control Officer. · To be aware of the O.T. protocols and the layout. · To supervise carbolizations and ensure it is done regularly and effectively. · To identify instruments as per the surgery, check cleanliness and proper functioning of instruments, pack and send for autoclaving / gas sterilization. · To ensure that all the materials needed for the surgeries which are PMR and instrument sets, Linen, Gowns, etc. are available. · To check the instrument trolley carefully and record items likely to be left inside. · To check the preparation of the patient for cleanliness, skin shaving for the particular surgery. · To re-check instrument trolley items as per the record and give clearance to the surgeon for closing. · To clean the patient after applying the dressing and place in a comfortable position. · To ensure the patient is shifted properly to the recovery room as soon as the anesthetist gives the clearance. · To settle PMR and to hand over the remaining materials to the OT store. · To wash, dry, lubricate joints, check the functioning of instruments, pack and dispatch for autoclaving. · To be aware and implement Infection Control Measures: · To follow proper hand washing techniques. · To follow the dress code in and out of the restricted areas. · To receive the patient in the preoperative area, check for the right patient, correct documents, and for the right surgery and transfer to the Operation Theatre. · To follow pre-anesthetic medications if any. · To check for the right patient, I.D. No., site of surgery, type of surgery, and operating surgeon when the anesthetist calls “Time out” inside the operation theatre. · Scrub nurse prepares for assisting the surgeon. · Circulating nurse to fill up intraoperative nursing record. · Transfer the patient to postoperative ward. · Postoperative nurse to complete the postoperative flow sheet. · Follow normal procedure, connect ET tube to the ventilator, ECG leads to monitor, CD tubes to chest drainage bottle and in-dwelling urinary catheter to urobag. · To give antibiotics to the patient as per the standard medication time. · Suctioning, inhalation, chest physiotherapy and back care to be given as necessitated. · To pack and get autoclaved/ gas sterilization of dressings, linen, drainage bottles etc. · To check and record the vital signs of the patient like BP, pulse rates, respiration, and intake-output ratio. · To feed the patient after ensuring that it is the correct diet by checking diet order for diet tolerances. · To collect stat specimens or wound culture if necessary and follow up for reports. · To take responsibility for shifting the patient to the ward after ensuring that the charts, reports, ECG, X-ray and lab results are all checked properly. · To inform about the shifting of the patient to the charge nurse and attendant. To also intimate the Reception, F& B and charge nurse of the other unit. · To ensure narcotic protocols are followed if any narcotic or dangerous drug is to be administered on Doctor’s written instruction in detail. · To fill up the Nursing Assessment Guide within 24 hrs of patient’s admission. · To ensure that the patient is comfortable and implement safety measures for vulnerable patients as per the policy. · To perform patient and family education. · To review the doctor’s notes and the drug chart on admission and implement action as required. · To raise pharmacy indents, check on receipt, and stock in the patient’s bedside locker. · · Administration of oral drugs, intramascular and intrvenous injections as prescribed by the doctors.
