Exploring the role

The Staff Development Engineer is responsible for designing, developing, and deploying scalable and maintainable software solutions. This role involves providing coding and story estimates, conducting code reviews, ensuring software quality, and mentoring junior engineers. The ideal candidate will have deep technical expertise in Java, Spring Boot, AWS, Kubernetes, and modern software development practices.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Design, develop, and deploy software solutions aligned with business and technical requirements.
  • Provide accurate coding and story point estimates for development tasks.
  • Review code contributions, identify potential improvements, and ensure adherence to coding standards.
  • Assess the quality, performance, and maintainability of software products.
  • Troubleshoot complex software issues and deliver efficient, maintainable solutions.
  • Evaluate and decide on trade-offs between technical and design approaches to optimize performance and scalability.
  • Mentor and guide Software Development Engineers (SDE 1), fostering a culture of continuous learning and improvement.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to deliver high-quality, timely software solutions.
  • Work within Agile frameworks (Scrum/Kanban) to ensure efficient development cycles.

Knowledge:

  • Strong knowledge of Java, Spring Boot, and microservices architecture.
  • Proficient in AWS cloud services, Kubernetes, Docker, and CI/CD processes.
  • Deep understanding of data structures, algorithms, and computer science fundamentals.
  • Experience with relational (MySQL) and NoSQL databases.
  • Understanding of service-oriented architectures and web-based solutions.
  • Familiarity with AI-assisted development tools such as CursorAI and GitHub Copilot.

Skills:

  • Strong coding and problem-solving skills with an emphasis on efficiency and maintainability.
  • Excellent software design and architectural decision-making capabilities.
  • Proficient in Linux command-line usage and scripting.
  • Strong communication and collaboration skills, both verbal and written.
  • Skilled at reviewing and improving others’ code for quality and performance.
  • Ability to provide mentorship and technical guidance to junior engineers.
  • Experienced in working within Agile environments using Scrum or Kanban methodologies.

Abilities:

  • Ability to troubleshoot and decode complex software problems effectively.
  • Ability to evaluate trade-offs and make balanced technical decisions.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a cross-functional team.
  • Ability to adapt quickly to emerging technologies and evolving business needs.
  • Ability to uphold and enforce best practices in software design, testing, and deployment.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or a related technical field.
  • 7+ years of hands-on software development experience.
