Position: Senior Mechanical Engineer Rotating Equipment Location: Chennai Department: Engineering Reports To: Lead Mechanical Engineer Position Type: Full-time Job Summary: The Senior Mechanical Engineer Rotating Equipment will be responsible for the design, specification, and selection of rotating equipment such as pumps, compressors, turbines, and motors for oil and gas projects during the Conceptual , FEED , and Detailed Engineering phases. The role requires in-depth knowledge of mechanical design and engineering, equipment performance, and integration into the overall system. The Senior Engineer will work closely with multidisciplinary teams to ensure that rotating equipment is designed, specified, and installed according to project requirements, industry standards, and client specifications. Key Responsibilities: 1. Conceptual Design Phase: Lead the rotating equipment design effort during the conceptual design phase of oil and gas projects. Review the project scope, process flow diagrams (PFDs), and piping and instrumentation diagrams (P&IDs) to identify rotating equipment requirements. Define the preliminary specifications and selection criteria for rotating equipment, such as pumps, compressors, motors, and turbines, based on project requirements. Conduct feasibility studies for the selection of rotating equipment and assess their integration with the overall system design. Coordinate with process engineers to determine flow rates, operating pressures, and temperature conditions that influence rotating equipment selection. Provide input into project cost estimation, schedules, and project risks related to rotating equipment. Perform preliminary sizing and selection of rotating equipment in accordance with initial project requirements. Collaborate with other engineering disciplines (process, electrical, instrumentation, and structural) to ensure that rotating equipment designs are fully integrated into the overall project. Ensure that conceptual designs adhere to safety, quality, and environmental standards. 2. FEED (Front-End Engineering Design) Phase: Lead the detailed design development of rotating equipment during the FEED phase, ensuring compliance with project requirements and industry standards. Specify and select rotating equipment, including pumps, compressors, turbines, and electric motors, in line with project specifications and client needs. Develop and review detailed equipment specifications, datasheets, and technical documentation for rotating equipment packages. Perform detailed calculations for equipment sizing, including head calculations for pumps, power requirements for compressors and turbines, and efficiency analysis. Review and approve vendor technical proposals for rotating equipment, ensuring compliance with project specifications and industry codes (API, ASME, ANSI, etc.). Collaborate with procurement and supply chain teams to evaluate vendor quotations and select equipment based on performance, cost, and lead time. Integrate rotating equipment into the overall system, ensuring compatibility with piping systems, electrical systems, and control systems. Participate in risk assessments (HAZID, HAZOP) to ensure the safety, reliability, and operability of rotating equipment within the system. Prepare and review project documentation, including equipment layouts, installation plans, and material specifications. Review and optimize designs for efficiency, cost, and operability, ensuring alignment with project goals. 3. Detailed Engineering Phase: Lead the detailed engineering of rotating equipment systems, ensuring all design, documentation, and specifications are developed according to project requirements. Oversee the preparation of detailed equipment datasheets, technical specifications, and procurement packages for rotating equipment. Provide detailed calculations and analysis for mechanical design, including power and torque calculations, vibration analysis, and bearing selection for pumps, compressors, and turbines. Review vendor documents and shop drawings for rotating equipment, ensuring that the designs meet project specifications and regulatory standards. Provide technical input to equipment layout drawings, including alignment, installation, and accessibility for maintenance. Coordinate with other engineering disciplines to ensure that rotating equipment is correctly integrated with the rest of the mechanical, electrical, and piping systems. Review and approve technical documents related to rotating equipment, such as operational manuals, maintenance instructions, and installation drawings. Provide ongoing technical support to procurement teams during equipment selection and supply, ensuring that all specifications are met and materials are delivered on time. Supervise and mentor junior engineers, reviewing their designs, calculations, and documentation to ensure compliance with industry standards and project requirements. Conduct site visits to assess installation and commissioning progress, troubleshooting design-related issues during construction and startup. Collaborate with the commissioning and operations teams to ensure that rotating equipment performs as intended during startup and throughout the operational life of the project. Prepare and maintain technical reports, project documentation, and design change notices. 4. General Responsibilities: Ensure all rotating equipment designs meet the relevant industry codes, standards (e.g., API, ASME, ISO, ANSI), and regulatory requirements. Provide leadership and technical expertise to the project team throughout the design and execution phases. Support the integration of rotating equipment into the overall plant and facility, ensuring seamless coordination with other systems. Participate in design reviews, providing technical insights and identifying potential risks and mitigation measures. Provide ongoing technical support during construction, installation, and commissioning, ensuring that designs are accurately implemented. Ensure all rotating equipment systems are designed for operational efficiency, ease of maintenance, and safety. Contribute to project cost control efforts by identifying opportunities for cost savings through efficient equipment selection and optimization. Stay current with technological developments and innovations in rotating equipment design and maintenance practices. Qualifications: Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering or a related field. A Master’s degree is a plus. 8+ years of experience in rotating equipment design and engineering, with significant experience in the oil and gas industry. In-depth knowledge of rotating equipment design, including pumps, compressors, turbines, and motors, with practical experience in selecting, sizing, and specifying these systems. Strong understanding of industry standards and codes such as API (e.g., API 610, API 617, API 686), ASME, ANSI, and others. Proficiency in mechanical design software and tools such as AutoCAD, or other design and simulation tools.
