- To handle patients of all ages.
- To check O.T. list of surgeries on daily basis.
- Ensure that the patient arrives on time and check the patient records preoperatively.
- To check O.T. units preoperatively.
- Preparation of the patients for minor, major and emergency surgeries.
- To inform the surgeon about the operation in advance.
- To forward bills to the billing department to avoid any loss of revenue.
- To arrange medicines and consumables.
- To do pain assessment and monitoring.
- Handover patient valuables to the patient`s attendant.
- To check patient details before surgery.
- To follow O.T. specific policies and procedures.
- To act as per the defined roles on the activation of emergency codes.
- Taking over patients and the details of the surgery properly.
- To take a stock of the drugs in coordination with Pharmacist.
- To ensure that all equipments in the O.T. are in working condition and to coordinate with biomedical department in case the equipments are not in proper working condition.
- Early & timely assessment of the patient to detect any complications.
- Notify any untoward incident following the process of incident reporting.
- Safety and emergency preparedness.
- To fill the surgical safety checklist..
- Professional development through training in resuscitative technique like BLS, ACLS, NALS, PALS.
- Follow infection control, quality indicators and various hospital policies.
- To know about O.T. specific packages.
Performs Ongoing Patient Assessment
- Complete timely nursing assessment & perform ongoing assessment.
- To collect patient information.
- To conduct physical examination of the patient and obtain their vital signs, hemodynamic values and neurological values.
- To perform system assessments and psychological assessments.
- To review diagnostic test result, evaluate findings to identify patient needs, notify physician of reportable information.
Perform patient physical care
- To provide pre-operative care to the patient.
- Identification of the patient correctly by patient name and I.D.
- To perform fall risk assessment 7 reduce the risk of fall.
- Assesses and identifies the vascular access needs and maintain fluid and electrolyte balance.
- To ensure utmost comfort and provide pre-operative personal hygiene.
- To provide nutritional support and promote wound healing.
- To collect patient blood samples, biopsy and send it to the appropriate labs for investigations.
- To provide patient care during transport to appropriate Operation theatre.
- To do safe shifting of patients from pre-operative room to stretcher and then from stretcher to respective operation theatre.
Patient medication
- To check pre medication.
- To provide correct and timely medication to the patient.
- To provide complete medication i.e. administer IV Medications via central lines and peripheral lines and ensure correct titration of medications if required.
- To administer intramuscular, subcutaneous, topical and epidural medication.
Equipment upkeep
- To do cleaning and disinfecting the equipments.
- To obtain and setup appropriate equipment and supplies.
- Optimum utilization and upkeep of O.T. specific equipments including glucometer.
- To check crash cart.
- Analyze equipment related patient result and response, troubleshooting unexpected findings, solving the identified problems, evaluating need for continual use of equipment, and discontinuing the use of equipment if required.
- To follow equipment safety protocols.
Assist in specialized procedures
- To ensure preparation of the patient including site marking.
- To do checking all required investigations in the file of the patient.
- To assess level of consciousness.
- To assist in cardiopulmonary arrest.
- To assist the doctor during Intubation and extubation.
- Assist in procedures like insertion of lines, insertion of ryle’s tube, nebulization, oxygen administration, suctioning, tracheostomy care and lumbar puncture.
Patient & family Education
- To maintain confidentiality of patient.
- To provide patient & family education.
- To provide diagnosis specific patient and family education.
- To act as a team member during crisis management and participate in end of life care including grief management.
- Maintain safe environment.
- To provide safe environment for staff and patient.
- To protect patient from injury, accessibility to emergency medical equipment, follow infection control protocols, correct biomedical and hazardous waste disposal, maintain electrical and fire safety.
- Active participation during code HAZMAT situation.
