Job Summary:

The Nursing Superintendent is responsible for the overall management, supervision, and coordination of nursing services throughout the hospital. The role ensures high standards of patient care, staff efficiency, discipline, and adherence to hospital policies and nursing protocols.

Key Responsibilities:

1. Administration and Supervision

  • Plan, organise, and direct all nursing services to ensure optimal patient care.
  • Supervise and guide Deputy Nursing Superintendents, Ward Sisters, and Staff Nurses.
  • Prepare duty rosters, leave schedules, and work allocation to maintain adequate staffing levels.
  • Ensure proper maintenance of equipment, supplies, and facilities in all nursing units.
  • Participate in hospital management meetings and policy formulation.

2. Patient Care Management

  • Ensure all patients receive compassionate, ethical, and evidence-based nursing care.
  • Monitor patient satisfaction and respond to complaints or concerns promptly.
  • Coordinate with medical and administrative departments for smooth patient care delivery.
  • Oversee infection control practices and nursing documentation standards.

3. Human Resource Development

  • Identify training needs and organise in-service education, workshops, and skill enhancement programmes.
  • Conduct performance appraisals and recommend promotions, transfers, or disciplinary actions.
  • Mentor junior nurses and encourage professional development.

4. Quality Assurance & Compliance

  • Implement and monitor quality assurance programmes in nursing services.
  • Ensure compliance with hospital policies, nursing council regulations, and accreditation standards (e.g., NABH, JCI).
  • Maintain up-to-date nursing records, reports, and statistics.

5. Coordination and Communication

  • Liaise with doctors, paramedical staff, and administrative personnel for efficient healthcare delivery.
  • Serve as a link between the nursing staff and hospital management.
  • Promote effective communication across all levels of the nursing hierarchy.

6. Emergency and Crisis Management

  • Supervise nursing response during emergencies, mass casualty incidents, or outbreaks.
  • Ensure preparedness for disaster management and emergency protocols.

Qualifications:

  • M.Sc. Nursing or B.Sc. Nursing with extensive experience (usually 1015 years, including supervisory roles).
  • Registered Nurse and Midwife under the State Nursing Council.
  • Sound knowledge of hospital administration and modern nursing practices.

Skills and Competencies:

  • Strong leadership, organizational, and decision-making abilities.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Ability to handle stress and maintain composure in emergencies.
  • Proficiency in computer applications and hospital information systems.
