Role Summary
The Literacy Instructional Coach is a key member of the Pedagogical Leadership Team, responsible for elevating literacy teaching and learning across the school. The coach works collaboratively with teachers to enhance instructional practices through modelling, co-teaching, collaborative planning, and data-driven reflection. The ultimate goal is to improve student engagement, comprehension, fluency, and writing outcomes.This non-evaluative role is grounded in trust, collaboration, and professional growth. The Literacy Coach builds instructional capacity, strengthens curriculum alignment, supports authentic literacy practices across subjects, and ensures that language learning reflects internationally recognized educational philosophies.
Key Responsibilities
- Instructional Leadership & Teacher Support
- Engage teachers in a structured coaching cycle across grade levels.
- Collaboratively plan reading and writing lessons.
- Model literacy practices such as guided reading, shared reading, and writing workshops.
- Co-teach to support differentiated instruction.
- Observe lessons and provide reflective, data-informed feedback.
- Mentor teachers to develop proficiency in balanced literacy frameworks.
- Promote inquiry-based, student-centered literacy instruction across subjects.
- Guide administration and interpretation of the Fountas & Pinnell Benchmark Assessment System (BAS).
- Support differentiated teaching for diverse learners, including English language learners and advanced readers.
- Collect evidence of coaching impact to support schoolwide instructional improvement.
- Curriculum & Programme Development
- Collaborate with curriculum leaders to strengthen the literacy curriculum.
- Ensure vertical alignment and coherence of literacy instruction across grades.
- Integrate literacy authentically within the Programme of Inquiry (POI) and subject-specific contexts.
- Align literacy practices with key approaches to learning (ATL).
- Support implementation of best practices in reading and writing instruction.
- Curate and recommend high-quality literature and mentor texts.
- Data & Assessment
- Lead administration, analysis, and interpretation of Fountas & Pinnell BAS and other standardized assessments.
- Support teachers in using data to inform Guided Reading groups and targeted instruction.
- Facilitate moderation of reading and writing assessments to ensure consistency.
- Analyze diagnostic, formative, and summative literacy data to identify trends and needs.
- Assist teachers in using data dashboards and monitoring tools to track student progress.
- Professional Learning
- Design and deliver professional development workshops on key literacy practices.
- Lead literacy-focused Professional Learning Communities (PLCs).
- Support teachers in setting literacy-focused professional goals.
- Stay updated on global literacy research and international curriculum developments, sharing insights with staff.
- Community Engagement
- Facilitate parent workshops and family initiatives to deepen understanding of literacy learning.
- Promote a schoolwide culture of reading through events, author visits, book clubs, and celebrations.
- Collaborate with the library/media team to ensure access to diverse, high-quality texts.

- Contribute to the strategic development and implementation of a whole-school literacy programme.
- Build strong, collaborative relationships with teachers, students, and families.
- Model adaptability, curiosity, and effective use of instructional technology.

Required Qualifications & Experience
Must-Haves
- Master’s degree in Education, English, Literacy, or related field.
- Significant literacy teaching experience, ideally in international curricula such as the IB PYP or Cambridge Lower Secondary Programme.
- Expertise in Fountas & Pinnell BAS and Guided Reading.
- Strong understanding of balanced literacy frameworks, reading comprehension strategies, and writing pedagogy.
- Experience in instructional coaching, mentoring, or literacy leadership.
- Strong data analysis and instructional application skills.
- Excellent communication, facilitation, and interpersonal skills.
- Commitment to promoting a culture of literacy and lifelong learning.
- Minimum 2 years of stable experience within a school environment.
