About the role: As a Senior Editor at Family Handyman, you ll use your subject-matter knowledge and sharp editorial eye to edit and publish engaging, on-brand articles, listicles and how-to projects to drive organic traffic and increase visibility of our digital presence. With an understanding of SEO best practices and an interest in area of home and garden DIY content, the Senior Editor will manage a team of writers focused on updating and polishing existing Family Handyman content. This position reports to a Senior Manager. About you: You are a strong editor who s passionate about service journalism: a pro at writing compelling headlines and shaping quality content that answers readers questions. You have a mastery of grammar and house style, enjoy finding just the right word to convey a thought, and can distill the basic elements of complicated information and work with text until it flows smoothly. You are well-versed in SEO best practices and familiar with SEO tools like Google Keyword Planner, SEMRush and Yoast SEO. You enjoy managing people and appreciate the value of giving regular feedback to help others grow. You are collaborative in nature and understand how to work with a team to make content come to life across multiple channels. Driven by deadlines and with strong time-management skills, you can work through a high volume of stories efficiently, effectively and on time, enabling the team to meet its ambitious production goals. Your day-to-day: Lead a small team of writers tasked with updating SEO-driven (Search Engine Optimization) DIY home and garden content. Assign and edit Family Handyman articles and listicles according to daily publishing goals, adhering to AP and house style, as well as SEO best-practices. You mentor team members by sharing SEO and writing knowledge and regularly providing feedback. You support editorial strategy with a full understanding of editorial integrity, brand voice, shareability and engagement, as well as SEO principles and social networks. Manage assignments and edits with daily direction from the Senior Manager. You have: 5-7 years of editing and writing experience in media/publishing, including 4 years of direct digital experience required; professional culinary experience a plus. 2+ years of management experience with multiple reports is required. Bachelors degree in English, communications, marketing or related field preferred. Proven knowledge of SEO keyword research tools, a CMS such as WordPress, a project database such as Airtable, basic HTML, Microsoft Excel, as well as AP style. Effective communication skills: comfortable accepting and giving constructive feedback, with a commitment to supporting an evolving, dynamic team. Project management skills, with the ability pivot between tasks, consistently meeting deadlines and catching all the details. Strong understanding of the digital landscape, particularly SEO strategy and performance metrics. A keen familiarity with, and interest in, the DIY home and garden space.
