Role Summary
The Electrical Superintendent is responsible for the overall monitoring, technical support, troubleshooting, and maintenance coordination of all electrical and electronic systems across the assigned fleet. The role ensures safe, efficient, reliable operation of vessel systems while maintaining compliance with Class, Flag, ISM, and industry standards. The position involves frequent vessel interaction, dry-docking supervision, and strategic planning to enhance electrical reliability and fleet performance.
1.Key Responsibilities
A. Technical Support & Troubleshooting
- Provide real-time technical assistance to vessels for electrical, electronic, automation, and instrumentation issues.
- Resolve faults related to generators, switchboards (HV/LV), motors, VFDs, transformers, UPS systems, emergency power, navigation, and communication systems.
- Guide ship staff through remote troubleshooting and emergency repairs.
- Perform root-cause analysis on electrical failures and recommend preventive measures.
B. Maintenance Oversight
- Monitor vessel Planned Maintenance System (PMS) for all electrical routines.
- Ensure timely completion of electrical maintenance tasks and proper documentation.
- Track performance of safety-critical and essential machinery.
- Review maintenance reports and take corrective actions where required.
C. Dry Docking & Major Repairs
- Prepare detailed electrical repair specifications for dry-docking and major overhauls.
- Supervise electrical work during dry dock, including switchboard maintenance, motor overhauls, automation calibration, cable renewals, and equipment commissioning.
- Liaise with shipyards, contractors, and vendors to ensure quality work at minimum cost.
- Verify testing procedures, insulation readings, and equipment performance post-repair.
D. Compliance & Safety
- Ensure all electrical systems meet Class, Flag State, industry, and company requirements.
- Support vessels in SIRE, PSC, Class, and internal audits/inspections.
- Ensure electrical work adheres to safe isolation practices, LOTO procedures, and HV safety protocols.
- Maintain and update electrical safety documentation and technical manuals.
E. Budgeting & Resource Management
- Prepare annual electrical maintenance budgets and monitor expenditure.
- Optimize spare parts inventory, evaluate vendors, and approve procurement requests.
- Evaluate and select third-party contractors and service engineers.
F. Training & Crew Development
- Conduct electrical training programs for ETOs and technical officers.
- Guide onboard personnel in safe operation, troubleshooting, and maintenance practices.
- Develop updated checklists, procedures, and best-practice manuals for fleet-wide use.
2.Qualifications
- Diploma or Degree in Electrical / Electronic Engineering.
- 10+ years sea service as ETO / Electrical Officer.
- 1 - 2 years shore-based experience in Technical Department or similar role.
- Familiarity with Class Rules (ABS, DNV, LR), ISM, ISPS, OCIMF/SIRE, and marine industry standards.
3.Required Skills & Competencies
Technical Skills
- Strong knowledge of marine power generation, HV/LV distribution, switchboards, generators, motors, and VFDs.
- Skilled in automation/PLC systems, instrumentation, ESD, fire & gas, and cargo control systems.
- Proficient in troubleshooting electrical, electronic, and navigational systems (radar, GPS, ECDIS, communication equipment).
- Ability to read and interpret electrical drawings, schematics, and technical manuals.
- Experienced in electrical system maintenance, insulation testing, motor overhauling, and preventive maintenance.
- Competent in dry-docking electrical planning, supervision, repairs, and commissioning.
- Hands-on experience with microprocessor-based systems, converters, and high-speed bus interfaces.
- Strong understanding of marine electrical safety, isolation, and LOTO procedures.
- Proficient in PMS, MS Office, and technical reporting.
