DevOps Engineer

Role Overview: You will be joining the team responsible for building the Common Data Backbone (CDB) at Fugro, which is the strategic data platform enabling discovery, governance, and integration across the global geospatial data ecosystem. Your primary focus will be on expanding and maturing the Kafka infrastructure on AWS to ensure secure cluster setup, lifecycle management, performance tuning, DevOps, and reliability engineering to run Kafka at enterprise-grade standards. Key Responsibilities: - Design, deploy, and maintain secure, highly available Kafka clusters in AWS, either MSK or self-managed. - Conduct capacity planning, performance tuning, and proactive scaling of Kafka clusters. - Automate infrastructure and configuration using Terraform and GitOps principles. - Implement observability metrics, Grafana dashboards, and CloudWatch alarms for monitoring. - Develop runbooks for incident response, disaster recovery, and rolling upgrades. - Ensure compliance with security and audit requirements such as ISO27001. - Collaborate with development teams to provide Kafka best practices for .NET microservices and Databricks streaming jobs. - Conduct resilience testing and maintain documented RPO/RTO strategies. - Drive continuous improvement in cost optimization, reliability, and operational maturity. Qualifications Required: - 5-6 years of experience in DevOps/SRE roles with at least 4 years of hands-on Kafka operations at scale. - Strong knowledge of Kafka internals including partitions, replication, ISR, controller quorum, and KRaft. - Expertise in AWS services like VPC, EC2, MSK, IAM, Secrets Manager, and networking. - Proven experience with TLS/mTLS, SASL/SCRAM, ACLs, and secure cluster design. - Proficiency in Infrastructure as Code (preferably Terraform) and familiarity with CI/CD pipelines. - Experience in monitoring and alerting using Grafana, CloudWatch, and log aggregation. - Strong scripting skills in Bash and Python for automation. - Excellent documentation and communication skills. - Kafka Certification is required.
