Consultant Paediatric Neurologist

Role & responsibilities

• Evaluate and diagnose neurological conditions in children, including:
• Epilepsy and seizure disorders
• Cerebral palsy
• Developmental delays and regression
• Headaches and migraines
• Movement disorders (tics, Tourette syndrome, dystonia)
• Neuromuscular diseases (muscular dystrophy, spinal muscular atrophy)
• Neurogenetic and metabolic disorders
• Autism spectrum disorders with neurological co-morbidities
• Concussion and traumatic brain injury
• Stroke and vascular disorders in children
• Brain tumors and neuro-oncology (often in collaboration with oncology)
• Neurocutaneous syndromes (neurofibromatosis, tuberous sclerosis, etc.)
• Sleep disorders with neurological basis
• Perform and interpret specialized tests:
• Electroencephalography (EEG), video-EEG monitoring
• Electromyography (EMG) and nerve conduction studies (in collaboration with neurophysiologists)
• MRI, CT, PET, and other neuroimaging
• Lumbar puncture and CSF analysis
• Genetic and metabolic testing
• Develop and manage long-term treatment plans:
• Prescribe anti-seizure medications, Botox for spasticity, ketogenic diet for epilepsy, etc.
• Coordinate multidisciplinary care (physiotherapy, occupational therapy, speech therapy, neuropsychology, genetics, neurosurgery)
• Perform or assist in procedures such as vagus nerve stimulator (VNS) programming, intrathecal baclofen pump management, etc.
• Provide inpatient consultations for critically ill children (PICU/NICU) with neurological issues (status epilepticus, stroke, encephalitis, Guillain-Barr syndrome, etc.)
• Conduct outpatient clinics and follow-up visits
• Counsel families about prognosis, genetic implications, and lifestyle modifications
• Participate in on-call rotas for emergency neurological care in children
