Job Summary

The Chartered Accountant will serve as a key member of the universitys finance department, responsible for managing all financial transactions, ensuring statutory compliance, and providing strategic financial insights to support decision-making by management and the governing body. This role requires a combination of technical accounting expertise, analytical capability, and the ability to effectively communicate complex financial information to non-financial stakeholders in an academic environment.

Key Responsibilities

1. Financial Reporting & Analysis

• Prepare, review, and publish timely and accurate monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements (balance sheet, income statement, cash flow, etc.) in accordance with applicable accounting standards.
• Conduct detailed financial analysis to support management decisions and institutional planning.

2. Budgeting & Forecasting

• Lead the preparation of the university’s annual budget and financial forecasts.
• Monitor financial performance against budget, analyze variances, and recommend corrective actions to ensure financial targets are met.

3. Auditing & Compliance

• Coordinate and manage internal and external audit processes.
• Serve as the primary liaison for auditors and ensure compliance with statutory laws, regulatory requirements, and sector-specific guidelines for educational/non-profit organizations.

4. Internal Controls & Risk Management

• Design, implement, and maintain robust internal control systems and financial policies to safeguard assets and ensure accurate financial reporting.
• Identify financial and operational risks and develop mitigation strategies.

5. Taxation

• Oversee tax planning, compliance, and filing of returns in accordance with applicable laws.
• Provide guidance on tax-efficient practices and changes in tax legislation affecting the university.

6. Financial Operations Management

• Supervise daily accounting operations including accounts payable, accounts receivable, payroll, and general ledger maintenance.
• Ensure timely reconciliation of accounts and accuracy of financial data.

7. Strategic Financial Advisory

• Advise university leadership on financial planning, investment management, and cost optimization strategies.
• Support long-term institutional sustainability through effective financial modeling and scenario analysis.

8. Systems & Process Improvement

• Ensure effective use of accounting systems and financial software to enhance efficiency.
• Stay updated with technological advancements and recommend improvements in financial processes and systems.

Qualifications & Experience

• Education:

  Chartered Accountant (CA) qualification from a recognized professional body.

• Experience:

• Minimum 5 years of post-qualification experience, preferably in a senior accounting or finance role within an educational, non-profit, or public sector organization.
• Proven experience in internal controls, audit coordination, and financial reporting.
